Prologue

Met this dude called Lunaci in channel nohunters. Believe it or not he had the name -=MrFurious=-. I at first thought it was ducky spoofing my name cause my lag had pissed him off earlier during the evening. I found out that he actually had this name completly as a coincidence and since he had just started using it he graciously reverted to his previous Id. We then played a game on Dark continent where his zerg owned mine due to my lack of understanding of zerg economics (namely when to build troops and when to build drones). I asked for a rematch and got one, this time on lost temple.

Map: LT

Dudes:
[MrFurious] (me) randomed as blue terran at the 9:00 pos.
Lunaci randomed as red protoss at the 6:00 pos.

Terran command center somewhere in system L1113-55.

''We have just landed on L11133-55-3, please wake up sir."

I wake up to the adjudant online's voice holding my head and groaning. I was hung over, bad. getting off the bed, I amble towards my desk, open the corner drawer. I want to shut up DuGalle's voice which i keep hearing over and over again.

"Captain Furious, your apparent inability to secure even a single system has been unacceptable. Since your original background is in engineering, we have decided to transfer you to research and developement. You will oversee a colony of scientist as they study the remains of a ancient temple on L11133-55. It is in the farthest reaches of the sector and well er.... out of harm's way."

I find the bottle Smirnoff and drink deeply from it. ah... that shut him up. Making my way within the CC to the conference room, I notice a few of the scientists are already awake from cryo-sleep. I catch their awkward glances, yep they know about me. good, then they won't expect much and maybe they will leave me alone.

"Allright what do we got?" I ask as I come in.

"Sir?" I turn around to see a young man dressed in light gray coveralls marking him as a member of the space construction crews.

"Yes... er?"

"Clyde sir."

"Yes Clyde?" I ask.

"There was a mistake sir, I am not supposed to be here" he says, clearly uncomfortable.

"Really?" I ask again.

"Yes, I had requested posting with Commander Heartcutter sir."

Heartcutter. rage... taking over.... no, calm down, relax.

"This is the army son," I look at him quizzily as i scratch my 5 o'clock shadow. "You think you can dictate where you go?"

Taken aback by this, he was about to retort when the adujant came online again with a chilling message.

"Protoss energies detected in the hemisphere"

The protoss? here? why me? can't I just get a break? I take a swig of Smirnoff and relax. They're probably just passing through...

"Clyde, I am afraid we will have to discuss this later, get your team out and start mining." He leaves after snapping a sharp salute. Good kid, still has his illusions though. I am thinking now. My base is on a plateau with a single ramp access. I suppose that means I have to use Heartcutter's detailed protocols for just such a situation.

"Clyde, build a depot at the ramp in the standard configuration outlined in Heartcutter's protocols i suppose you are familiar with them?"

"Yes sir!". Clyde begins the depot as more of his crew start coming out to harvest the mineral patches. I send another one to build a barracks on the side of the choke closer to the CC to allow faster troop movement, again as per Heartcutter doctrine. When Clyde is finished I order him to take a little trip around see if he can't find the protoss.

As Clyde makes his way clockwise across the map, I get another depot to complete the wall-in and wait to build a refinery until after the rax is done. I find that if I get gas too early (refinery during rax construction) I get into mineral trouble later on. I pump out 3 rines to act as sentries

By the time Clyde finds the protoss I have one complete factory online and the other is working on the add-on. Clyde goes in and scouts well, finding 2 gates a cy core. and several zeals around. he manages to escape the base, albeit with a few bruises and returns to base.

"I think you should Deep six sir."

"Oh you do, do you?" I ask angrily. "Can't you see I already have two facs?"

Ok, back to thinking. Cycore could mean Dts or reavers pretty soon so...

"Clyde, arrange for an ebay and an academy to be up, we might be facing DTs or reavers soon and I don't want a repeat of what happened vs Executor Stinky-bug".

I realise my early move of waiting before the refinery had paid off, I had lots of cash in the bank even as i was pumping vultures. I order also a new Command Center to be built on the ledge right north of my current one. Early expand, well I have that part right...

A zealot comes next to my ramp without actually engaging.

"Ingenious drawbridge-like configuration Terran, good thinking"

What do these Toss think this is? a game?? The zealot hangs around until my first 2 tanks roll out and discourage him and he seeks shelter in my natural. 2 other tanks roll out and one joins the two others near the wall-in while the other becomes part of a bunker-tank-turret defense sytem at my CC. I am ready to float the new CC to its new location but how to do it without his knowledge since the zealot is there?

I get an idea and start to float the CC. My three vultures leave the base and assassinate the zealot scout but not before I have made sure that he saw the floating CC coming in. I then proceed to heavily mine the area while floating the CC all the way out over the natural northwards. Sure enough, a bunch of zelo-goons come over with the intent of stopping my expansion just as the CC clears the ridge on the other side of the nat and goes out of sight. His army dies hard to the mines and the tank fire from the ledge. This worked better than i thought and I could have kept the natural but the CC was already well on its way to its true destination: the top-left island.

I get an armory and scan his base to find out his next move. I see a forge and rob facs as new buildings. more importantly, I see no troops! This gets me thinking... why doesn't he have any troops stationed there? he's had time to get some since the battle. Unless...

"Clyde! I want a starport ASAP!" I bark.
"Huh? er... what for?"
"Just a hunch"

I keep producing tanks with a sprinkling of vultures as the cash dips low. when the comsat has regained its energy I scan his natural. Bingo! he had begun an expansion. the nexus was still warping in. The starport comes online and I order up a dropship as soon as possible. Loading it up with a tank, 2 rines and an scv, i send it over on a grand tour of the map with mission: Turbo-newbie. I have it check the other starts on its way just in case. As it appraoches the LZ I notice a shuttle pass by going the way i just came. I immediately order up another dropship because I am thinking I will need to assemble a team to save my top expansion.

Meanwhile, the scv builds a turret on the ridge and as soon as its done the tank sieges up and opens up on the probes below. The scv builds a bunker to house the marines as the dropship takes the long way home.

I assemble a team of 2 tanks a goliath and a vulture and load them in the two dropships. Since my exp hasn't been attacked, i must conclude that the mission of the shuttle was another expansion. A few scans reveal the three o'clock has a warping effect coming on, target acquired!

The drop goes off without a hitch and he is denied that expansion as well. I have now 3 facts and i am pumping tanks in earnest as i can feel the possible end of this game. As I pump them out I scan him enough to see he has a few goons guarding his natural but that shouldn't be a problem for the steam roller.

"Do you wonder what shall come first terran? the reaver or the Carrier?" The voice of the Executor Lunaci calls out through the comlink.

Carriers? Am i missing something? does he have a secret base? Scanning some more I reassure myself of his containement and proceed with operation Tank push. That is until my turbo newbie gets wasted by interceptors!

"Oh no!" I fall back in my chair in despair. Not failure again? what did i do wrong? does he really have a secret base? My tanks are on the move now with vultures, what should I do?

Then it hits me. I change the tanks' itinerary from his natural to the canyon between our bases. Placing newer tanks on the ledge and asking scvs to turret around them. I also ask for wraiths from the starport and gols and tanks from the facs. I have now 6 tanks in canyon 4 on ledge.

Using comsat I begin to rain death from below on his base. It doesn't take long for his carrier to show up and the turrets are only midly helpful as they are far away. however I do manage to knock out two gateways pylons and the forge as I dropped down tanks and goliaths. The single wraith tries to harass the big blimp but loses the fight.

He manages his carrier well, using the ledge of his base as proof against goliath fire. all they manage to do is keep the interceptors busy and give time for the tanks to do their thing.

Meanwhile I am still pumping out stuff and preparing a CC to take my natural. I decide to make a full on assault using 8 goliaths and 5 tanks. that team makes it to the enemy natural and encounters heavy goon resistance. they manage to defeat the goons with a loss of 2 gols and 2 tanks. I am able to take out the expansion completly with the tanks as the 6 goliaths fight 3 carriers. the carriers win this one although one of the mega-blimps buys it.

On a hunch i scan the 3:00 again. sure enough he is trying to set up again. taking 3 wraiths and my two dropships, I go on a double-pronged mission. The wraiths harass the carriers while I drop the expansion and kill it "dans l'oeuf" like we say in french.

"Well done terran," the voice booms over the comlink. "You may have this world congratulation on your victory but we shall meet again"

"Protoss energies indicate massive warp. they have evacuated sir" never did the adjudant's voice sound so sweet.

A few hours later, in my office, Clyde comes to see me.

"Sir, I would like you to disregard my earlier request"

I look at him bemused but say nothing.

"Sir?" he asks again "Do you have anything do say?"

I reach into my desk drawer.

"Want a drink ensign?"

Lessons learned

1) keep tabs on your opponent's expansion attempts. special shout-out to snowreaver for those hard lessons

2) When scanning, make sure you change the focus with each sweep. I never saw the single starport he had in his main base.

3) I should have gone ghosts as soon as I saw the carrier.

4) My island exp was totally unprotected if the carrier had gone there...
