This is the third game of a three game series between the Kali Team Sexy Bitches consisting of
Dudey
and
Maven
, and the Australian Team DAG, comprised of
Caglomera
and
Draegon
. The first game of the series went to DAG on Dire, and the Sexy Bitches tied it up in a closely fought River War game. This game decided who would go home with the victory. In the third round the map is determined randomly by the tournament organizer, and Hone had selected Sherwood Forest.
Early Game
Dudey
gave
Maven
a quick pep talk in the pre game chat.
Maven
responded with various threats about the dire fate awaiting
Dudey
should his bodily functions interrupt the coming game. Team Dag silently awaited their fate. When everyone signaled their readiness I began the game.
Dudey
started in the upper left corner as red protoss.
Maven
began in the upper right as white terran.
Draegon
selected yellow protoss in the left and
Caglomera
was blue terran in the bottom. Maven let Dudey know right from the start what sort of game he could expect.
Draegon
started out with a standard protoss double gateway build order next to his nexus.
Caglomera
began with a double barracks build at the entrance to his base, almost walling off the entrance. The fact that he had the least defensible choke of all the starting spots was probably worrying him a little.
Dudey
did a double gateway opening as well, although he built his gateways about halfway between his choke and his nexus.
Maven
, on the other hand, got a refinery before any other building, then proceeded to go depot, barracks, and double factory. He made only one marine all game with his heavy metal build.
An early skirmish turns deadly serious
Both of the teams began scouting the map, finding each other’s locations relatively quickly. Soon
Draegon
’s probe discovered
Maven
’s build, leading to some consternation of Team Sexy Bitches part.
Dudey
felt that Team Dag would immediately take advantage of the low troop count that the double factory build forced in the early part of the game and sent all his troops towards
Maven
. Team Dag interpreted the information a little differently, they decided that the low amount of troops
Maven
had would mean that he couldn’t reinforce
Dudey
and sent all their forces to attack
Dudey
. I was thinking the game was going to be cut short by an undefended double team on
Dudey
while all his troops were away at
Maven
’s, but fortunately
Dudey
sent in one of his probes for a last look at the protoss base, and spotted the zealot force coming toward’s him. Informing his partner of the impending double team,
Dudey
defended against four zealots, six marines, and two SCVs with six zealots. First he engaged the four zealots while the marines were not in range, then fled once the marines began firing. As he moved back toward’s the bridge leading to his base,
Maven
’s first two speedy vultures entered the field of combat from behind the enemy forces. The 20 explosive damage cut down the marines before they could effectively retaliate.
Maven
began doing hit and runs on the zealots as
Dudey
reemerged from his base with eight zealots, causing
Dudey
to profess his love for
Maven
.
This was, of course, meant only in the entirely heterosexual way one man can love another for his starcraft skill.
Draegon
fled his four zealots back towards his base, taking the occasional vulture grenade along the way. He advised
Caglomera
to bunker up and began warping a shield battery at the entrance to his ramp to help him hold off the double team as
Dudey
and
Maven
’s forces followed closely on his zealots heels. The battery finished just as
Draegon
’s zealots reached the ramp and turned and face their pursuers.
Caglomera
began sending reinforcements to try and help but they wouldn’t arrive for half a minute.
Dudey
simply attacked with his zealots, counting on his superior numbers to overcome the effects of a shield battery which hadn’t had any time to charge.
Maven
positioned his vultures off to the side of the ramp and used the spotting effect of
Dudey
’s zealots to pump fire into the enemy forces.
Maven
reinforced the effort with another vulture just as the last yellow zealot fell, leaving five of
Dudey
’s zealots combat effective.
Dudey
is understandably impressed with
Maven
’s skills at this point and expresses this in the most cordial way possible.
Maven
charges ahead with his vultures, pausing only long enough to mine the choke leading to the ramp, and begins assaulting the innocent probes of
Draegon
.
Dudey
took down the shield battery at the choke.
The fall of the Draegon
Caglomera
’s four marines and two SCVs arrived and began attacking the five zealots, assisted by a stray zealot from
Draegon
.
Dudey
quickly dealt with that force as I witnessed the sight of
Maven
blowing up an impressive amount of probes, his three vultures, and an unfortunate yellow zealot with what can only be described as “one too many” mines.
Maven
and
Dudey
are both pouring in troops as fast as three gateways and three factories can make them.
Dudey
’s zealots arrive from the choke and start hammering on gateways, then kill quite a few probes as
Draegon
’s plan becomes clear.
Maven
sees a wounded zealot right next to the nexus…and one of his mines. At
Dudey
’s urging he unallies
Dudey
for a moment and the mine engages the zealot, killing three probes and damaging the nexus. Two dark templar emerge from the yellow gateways and move to attack as the probes offer their own resistance.
Dudey
begins moving his zealots around the area a step ahead of the dark templar as
Maven
’s next set of vultures arrive and lay down a minefield next to the objectives of
Dudey
’s attack. One dark templar falls to the mines, and the other is unequal to the task of stopping the zealots before the nexus is destroyed. With a few more of
Maven
’s vultures laying down a minefield, soon even two more dark templar emerging from the gateways make no difference as they are swiftly dispatched.
Dudey
leaves his last two surviving zealots slowly dismantling the protoss base.
Caglomera goes for the gold
Draegon
is effectively reduced to a role as an observer at this point, and he offers
Caglomera
a bit of advice “Attack now with all you have.”
Caglomera
’s response of “I have 2 tanks” probably didn’t raise
Draegon
’s spirits too much as he went back to watching his base be deconstructed.
Dudey
is just now bringing his cybernetics core on line, showing
Draegon
that tech is best used once you’ve earned it in team games.
Caglomera
had expanded to the lower left area while the attack on his partner had been going on, and now expanded to the lower right area in an attempt to increase his resources.
Following
Draegon
’s advice he also attacked with his two tanks, losing one to defensive fire from
Maven
’s tanks above his ramp, then losing the other as
Maven
sent a vulture to plant a mine right next to the tank. A second set of two tanks from
Caglomera
arrived on
Maven
’s doorstep and once again spider mines were planted right next to them. While this was going on
Maven
attacked the lower left expansion, a lone vulture killing the helpless SCVs.
Dudey
sent his forces to reinforce
Maven
despite his protests that he was fine.
Dudey
’s instincts proved good and he intercepted a two tank and six marine task force with eight zealots. With zealot speed just finished,
Dudey
made quick work of the terran forces.
Maven
found the other blue expansion in the lower right with a vulture and planted a few mines before attacking. This time the SCVs fought back, and although the eight SCVs were reduced to three, they managed to kill the attacking vulture.
Dudey
was busy establishing the lower left expansion as his, cannoning it in even as the blue command center hovered overhead.
Maven
had a nice defensive set up at his ramp, consisting of seven tanks and a turret.
Caglomera
awaited the onslaught behind a bunker and four tanks.
Dudey
made the first move after everyone spent a few minutes building their forces. Nine speed zealots hit the lower right expansion, making short work of the mining SCVs despite their brave defense. Both
Maven
and
Caglomera
picked the same time to send a column of tanks at each other’s bases.
Maven
had eight tanks to
Caglomera
’s six, but
Caglomera
chose to siege his tanks first, giving him an immediate advantage and letting him kill two of Maven’s tanks in the first seconds of the conflict. As
Maven
’s remaining tanks sieged up just beyond firing range,
Caglomera
unsieged his tanks and switched paths to assault
Dudey
.
Maven
had left a few spider mines right at the bridge to
Dudey
’s base as a few unfortunate blue infantry men found out.
The bitter end
Dudey
attacked the tanks outside his bridge with a templar and five speed zealots. The two remaining marines died buying time for the tanks to retreat, but the speed zealots quickly caught up with the tanks.
Caglomera
tried to micro the tanks in a hit and run pattern on the zealots but the speed upgrade on the zealots frustrated him until
Maven
approached the engagement from behind with his tanks, putting an end to the attack.
Team Sexy Bitches massed a force of eight zealots and eight tanks outside
Caglomera
’s base for one last attack. The four tanks and the bunker along with six marines just wasn’t going to be enough to hold back the Sexy Bitches. The tanks sieged just out of visual range but within siege range while
Dudey
’s zealots raced to the attack. The choke quickly fell, although not without a few casualties taken by the attackers. As the forces overwhelmed the terran base
Maven
decided on one last act of terrorism and launched a nuke directly at
Caglomera
’s command center, prompting him to leave the game.
Congratulations to both teams on a game well played and to Team Sexy Bitches for advancing into the next round. I hope you enjoyed this report.
