The Players

Fractal_Wave: Selected Zerg
SnowSquall: Selected Terran

The map was chosen by Fractal and it was Predators. You can see where we both started on the image below.

Early Game.. to rush or not to rush?

SnowSquall starts off with a build order of the following:

8 Depot
11 Barracks
14 Barracks
15 Depot

SnowSquall was taking a risk if Fractal had decided to rush, but the SCV that constructed the initial depot was assigned to scout duty and traveled clockwise around the map. As you can see, the Zerg base was found fairly quickly and a pool was still in the formative stages.

Fractal as well was scouting and a drone came slithering into the Terran encampment as the lights of the first barrack were flashing, signifying a rather short life expectancy for the drone. Fractal decides the drone is expendable - but not to gauss rifles. The drone heads over to Snowsquall's geyser and transforms into an extractor!

As marines are produced, they begin to whittle down the extractor, but the process is a tedious one. SnowSquall decides to spend his extra resources on a 3rd barracks, and begins an academy anyways, while keeping up with SCV and depot construction. The extractor finally falls, and a refinery is immediately constructed upon the slimy remains.

SnowSquall has been busy however.

Q: Why is Fractal going "awww?" (notice the layout of terran buildings, as well)

A: Because of this?

SnowSquall's scouting SCV had built a bunker just outside of Fractal's field of vision. A 2nd bunker was in the process of being constructed when apparently Fractal became aware of the sinister bunkering attempt. His attempt to stop it with a handful of lings were..... not effective, as SnowSquall had brought 10 marines over, and now 4 of them were in the initial bunker.

The 2nd bunker completely shortly thereafter, and 4 more marines entered.

Fractal did an end around via the top half of the map, and 3 zerglings scampered into the Terran encampment. A good tight base design coupled with the fact the marines popped out inside the ring of buildings ensured a swift death for the zerglings.

Fractal was getting worried. However, he remembered that sunkens outrange bunkers, and began adding several more sunkens farther out from the ones he had near his hatchery. A deadly dance ensued, as SnowSquall's marines would engage the morphing colonies and then Fractal's zerglings would engage the marines. Sometime into the dance, the first hydralisks entered the fray as well.

Via good unit control, colonies were able to be morphed into sunkens, and the terran commander SnowSquall realized the futility of attempting to press forward... while inwardly smiling at the resources that Fractal was forced to spend at that stage in the game.

Middle Game.. or wheee! lets try this again!

SnowSquall retreated his marines slightly back, where they were met by 3 medics fresh from the barracks. Stimpack was almost finished researching, and a comsat was available to be used. Scanning into the zerg main revealed a lair.

SnowSquall begins an engineering bay at his base, and meanwhile continues to keep marines and medics flowing from his 3 barracks. The terran commander also had just completed a factory, obviously intending upon a seige.

Indeed that is what SnowSquall has in mind as he continues to hold firm with 2 bunkers still uncomfortably close to Fractal's base. As the first tank rolls off the line, it heads over and seiges up right behind a bunker.. and the sound of arclite fire is heard for the first time as a sunken is targeted.

At this point Fractal is forced to show his 3 lurkers that he had morphed, and burrow them close enough to where they can hit the one of the bunkers, and the tank. He covers the lurkers advance with a small handful of zerglings and a hydra or 2. The lurkers are able to burrow, but with a lightning quick comsat, 2 of them are able to be killed as a bunker and then the tank is destroyed.

Fractal attempts to break the seige.

SnowSquall elects to attack in a different direction (that's a pretty eupherism for retreat), but undeterred, he simply moves back about a screen's length and sets up a missle turret, and then a bunker, and then a tank seiges behind that.

SnowSquall sets up shop again.

+1 weapons is being researched at the engineering bay, and a starport is being constructed back in the terran base. When the starport finishes, SnowSquall produces a pair of wraiths. One scouts around the top half of the map, while the second one heads into Fractal's base from the south, popping one overlord before it is rudely shot down by hydralisks.

Fractal is not content to sit in his base however, and moves a mixed force of zerglings, hydras, and lurkers around the top half of the map and attacks SnowSquall's base from the top. Fortunately the terran commander was wary against such a move, knowing that there was more than one way out of the zerg base, and a sizeable pack of M&M's were milling around near a turret at the north end of SnowSquall's base. Fractal targets the turret first and it falls as the lurkers burrow and begin taking out large chunks of the terran infantry. However a tank fresh out of the factory seiges and with a comsat, the lurkers are whittled down with support from the few infantry that survived.

SnowSquall didn't micro that attack very well, probably because he was busy concentrating on his renewed push into Fractal's main, this time supported with tanks and missle turrets for detection.

During all of this, SnowSquall even found time to begin an expansion, marked on the following picture of the budding push on Fractal.

There was another good group of infantry just off to the right of this picture, moving up.

End Game.. or... The End

Fractal is in serious trouble as the tank push is well underway, and inexorably creeping towards..well..toward the creep. Zerglings and hydras aren't able to get close enough to assault the tanks which are supporting each other, and a combination of turrets and comsats are dealing with burrowed lurkers.

Fractal begins to realize the situation.

Not that Fractal is bitter. Nah.

Fractal's main is leveled in short order, and he conceeds.. sharing vision and revealing an expansion to the north of it. Unfortunately the extra production was not enough to break through a tough seige, and the attempt to attack SnowSquall's main from the north was foiled by excellant base layout.

I could almost swear malt liquor is being poured here...

Aftergame Wrapup

Many thanks to Fractal for the game.. I've owed him a battle report for sometime now in retribution for his "Much Ado about Nothing" where he did a little smackdown with tanks of his own.

Fractal had apparently expanded before I had.. as the final stats showed he had slightly outresourced me. It didn't matter, as he couldn't afford to tackle me head on and since I had my base secured from the only other route he could get in - he was in trouble. I think Fractal relied slightly too heavily on lurkers for too long.. they were more of an attack force for him rather than being a support unit.

After this game, Fractal & I had another game on a 192x192 map called Glacier Bay. My Zerg managed to barely beat his Protoss thanks to good usage of queens to broodling his supporting templar. It wasn't exactly a pretty game on either side, though. :)

Final stats.
