Introduction

This report is a Mark4 Production. www.BattleReports.com is available to support all your reporting needs.

This report is the first of a three game series between Season 3 PGL winner D23-Gadianton and professional gamer [9]Everlast. I was the sole referee as Metalicos, the other referee, had bad lag in relation to Everlast, and elected not to take part in deference to the players wishes. The first map choice was given to Gadianton and he selected River Styx.

Early Game

Both players were in high spirits and eager to start the match. Gadianton drew yellow terran from random and got the bottom start location. Everlast chose protoss and was brown, starting at the top of course. Everlast followed a standard build order for quick dragoons:

Pylon
Gateway
Assimilator
Pylon
Zealot
Cybernetics Core
Gateway

Everlast chose to scout with the probe that made his first pylon, sending it down to attack the SCV constructing the first barracks. Gadianton didn’t tolerate too much of that, attacking the probe with another SCV and chasing it away. The probe then circled around and hid at the natural expansion to the right of the main terran base. Gadianton was going for a quick marine rush build:

Depot
Barracks
Barracks
Depot
Depot
Academy

Gadianton also felt the need to scout, although he put it off until Everlast had confirmed Gad’s race with his probe. His SCV was chased away by the first zealot, but circled around and hid in the natural expansion to the left in a move mirroring Everlast’s.

The first decisive move of the game was made by Gadianton. His first three marines moved over to his natural expansion and killed the probe waiting there, catching it just as Everlast was about to send it through the terran base for some recon. Being the high level player that he is, Everlast wasn’t about to go through early game without knowledge of his enemy and immediately sent down another probe to gather intelligence. The probe saw an eleven marine task force leaving the terran base before turning and running. The probe runs to the upper bridge with the marines in hot pursuit. It’s gunned down just before the first upper bridge and the marines continue on past the location it died at for several seconds, waiting until the vision left by a dead unit dies out. Everlast sent all his available forces, 1 zealot and three dragoons, down to guard the choke of the upper bridge, while Gadianton moved his marines back down to the lower bridge and crossed there.

A bridge too far?

An additional two marines join the terran squad as it swings back by the barracks, then the force sneaks up the right side of the map until it hits the protoss base. More marines are being constantly sent after the first force in teams of two as they emerge from the barracks. Everlast is researching dragoon range at this point and has sent two more dragoons down to the choke point of the upper bridge. Two dragoons emerge from the gateways as the terran forces arrive.

Everlast tries to retreat the dragoons as the marines move in and attack.
All the protoss forces at the bridge move towards the scene of battle. Gadianton leaves five marines at the bottom of the protoss wall in to halt the reinforcements for a few seconds while eight marines chase a dragoon through the probe line.

When the eight marines are in the middle of the probes, the hiss of stim is heard for the first time in this battle and the probes are mowed down.
After the smoke clears only four probes are left alive, despite Everlast bringing a fleeing dragoon back to absorb some of the damage. The marines left behind to delay the protoss forces were run over without significant damage due to dragoon range finishing just before the attack. The reinforcing marines and medics are killed as they come in, then Everlast moves his dragoon army up through his base and kills the last marines.

The power of range.

I thought the game was over at this point, but Everlast had other ideas. He put three probes on minerals, one on gas, and moved his army down to the terran base. Gadianton had moved his forces back to his base. The first confrontation was between eight dragoons and nine marines and a medic.
Gadianton initially chased the dragoons back, but focus fire and range against the unranged marines made him pull back his forces. Construction was started on a third barracks and a factory at this point. Damage had been dealt to several dragoons, but the marines had been reduced to four. In order to force Gadianton to fight him, Everlast began attacking an outlying barracks. The terran marines run out to counter the dragoons, killing one, but lose a medic and two more marines.

More marines pop out of the barracks but focused singularity charge fire quickly kills them at the price of another goon.

Gadianton pulls his SCVs from mining and attacks with them as two more marines arrive out.

Everlast is carefully managing the five dragoons he has left and he keeps moving the damaged ones to the back of his forces. More dragoons are trickling in from the protoss base and the probe count is back up to eight. Everlast pulls his dragoons back after killing several SCVs and the SCVs return to mining. The dragoons move back for one final battle and are greeted by five marines. Focused fire turns the marines into red dots on the landscape, and the SCVs charge into an unequal battle once again. As the last SCV falls both players offer each other “GG”.

Second guessing

With the benefit of God vision, having plenty of time to reflect afterwards, and not enough sense to know when to keep quiet, I’ll offer a few comments on the game:

o The fake to the top bridge and moving up the lower one was a nice move by Gad. Sometimes you just get lucky, but this was obviously very well thought out.

o Rather than stim, maybe bringing two SCVs to make bunkers and getting range first would have been a good idea. Still, the initial terran attack was very successful.

o One tank and a bunker with SCVs repairing would probably have won Gad the game vrs Ever’s counterattack. Getting the factory early and forgetting a third barracks would have been a nice move.

o Dragoon dancing is godly vrs marines without range.

Congratulations to both players on a game well played. I hope that you have enjoyed my battle report.
