Game: 6 player FFA
When played: Last summer
Time of game: About an hour
I'm white terran, 3 oclock. I set up quick defenses south and west.
All is quiet. I have time to get tanks and turrets.
At about 15 minutes, I get hammered hard from the west as terran,
protoss and zerg armies collide in quick sucession. It turns out
there is an expansion to my the left of my main that everybody
wants.
The space is cramped, and being terran, I have to really squeeze
my buildings together tighter than I want. A bead of sweat forms
on my forehead as I hear "Nuclear launch detected." Oh,
lord. The other terran player has rushed to nukes, and I'm nuke
bait. I have to move fast.
I scan the local area and find a raised expansion. I lift off
one of my barracks and float it over. I pump m&m just in time to
counter a hydra drop from purple zerg. The expansion is mine. I
move forcefully to the west and take that expansion away from
blue protoss. I need the extra space. If I'm going to get
nuked, I want redundant buildings.
My offense stalls. Now I have to dig in some more. Two players
are wiped out. Who's left? I scan the other terran base.
Protoss and zerg are eating him alive. This is good news for now.
The myth is that protoss own zerg. I expect this. Since protoss
don't tolerate nukes very well, I tech up to nukes, build two
silos and 8 ghosts.
What's this? Green balls of flying crab puke! Purple zerg is
after my bunkers on my west expansion. Sci vessels to the
rescue. Mutas counter. Marines and ghosts hold them off. He
retreats.
Another player loses. I guess I missed something, because I look
around and it's just me (white terran) and the other guy (purple
zerg). Both protoss players are gone. So much for the myth. I
was working hard to counter carriers. Lockdown is useless
against zerg. I have miscalculated badly.
A few quick scans reveals that purple zerg owns two thirds of the
map. I am utterly surrounded. And this guy is no newbie. One
by one my tanks turn into worms, my scv's get parasites, and then
this red glop splatters all over my bunkers and turrets. I'm
neck deep and treading hard.
So why doesn't he attack and finish me off? The only thing he
sends are crackling probing attacks on my south flank. Strictly
hit and run. Why? I cloak my ghosts and send them out to recon.
Purple zerg has exhausted all his resources. He can't build an
army to come storming in. He is used up. I have some time.
More scouting brings it all into focus. There is one
slightly used expansion at the 12 oclock position. Very rich.
He has a hatchery and about 3 drones mining. That explains the
suicide attacks on my south flank. He wanted to keep my
attention away from the north side of the map. Farther south, he
had a wicked base set up with sunkens. He was trying to draw me
out.
I know that I must attack that north expansion immediately.
First, I have to double nuke an elevated expansion that blocks my
route. I throw together an m&m attack squad, a ghost, and a sci
vessel and proceed north. The final battle is at hand. I will
win. Or I will die.
Purple zerg is not an idiot. He knows I have nukes. What I
don't know is that he has a sizable force of hydras and
cracklings near the expansion, out of range of nukes. I double
nuke the hatchery, send in marines and scv's to bunker in. My
scv's instantly turn to broodlings. I send in two more. Two
more go down. I send two more, with extra marines. This time,
red glop.
I guess he split his forces. All at the same time, a hydra
crackling drop at my elevated expansion, a hydra crackling push
at the north expansion, and cracklings and queens on my south
flank. I ignore my elevated expansion and my south flank, and
send 2 sci vessels to the north expansion. I irradiate as many
enemy as I can and counter with marines and medics. He counters
with plague and dark swarm. He is winning. Marines are
exploding. Medics are used up and helpless. If I lose this
battle, I lose the expansion, and finally the game.
During the Viet Nam war, if a fire base was being overrun, the
commander could radio the code "broken arrow". This
meant call in artillery and air strikes on my position. If the
base is going to be overrun, then blow the whole thing to
smithereens. Put your troops into bunkers and let all hell rain
from the sky. The enemy couldn't believe it.
I called broken arrow. One nuke in the middle of the dark swarm.
I emptied two bunkers and sent the troops into the swarm to hold
the enemy in place. He was looking frantically all over the map
for the little red dot. It doesn't show up very well in that
orange cloud. Marines, medics, one sci vessel, cracklings,
hydras, at least one queen, one defiler, one or two lukers, and
one ghost all disintegrated under the orange plume.
Silence.
As the smoke cleared, my elevated expansion looked pretty bad,
but his suviving troops had got back into their overlords and
left. The tanks in my south flank were gone. The bunkers were
on fire.
I took a few marines and some scv's then went back to the north
expansion. I stuffed marines into bunkers as fast as I could. I
also started hunting overlords with my remaining sci vessels, to
clear the way for ghosts.
There were no more attacks from purple zerg.
Final examination of the map revealed that he had all zerg tech,
and at least 6 expansions. His mistake seems to be that he put
too many resources into sunken and spore colonies. They were all
over the place. One elevated expansion had 6 spore colonies.
What for? Static defenses were clusterd together, just waiting
to be nuked. So I did.
My ghosts played hide and seek with a handful of lurkers and
cracklings. Sci vessels hunted queens. He placed his queens and
overlords among the spore colonies for protection. One nuke.
All gone. He surrendered.
I should have lost this game. I started too slow, played too
much defense, didn't use my resources effectively. I got scared
and spent too much time worrying about where the next attack
would come from. I gave up on micro management in favor of
static defenses and nukes.
His mistake was not understanding that zerg live and die by
mobile offense. Zerg static defense is all but useless,
especially against terran seige tanks and nukes. If he had 24
more hydras, he could have overrun any single position, which
would have kept me away from that last expansion.
Some lessons: ghosts are very weak against zerg; zerg defense is
weak against terran; zerg air counters terran's strongest defense
(seige tanks); one defiler with consume and a handful of
zerglings (for lunch) can fry a terran base in short order.
To win, you have to know the whole game. I was lucky.
======================================================
This is a copy of a post I did last summer on b.net. I forgot the map and the other players' names. Sorry. It looks a lot like my other battle report, with terran and zerg fighting it out to the end. This is funny to me, because I hate playing terran. Just look at how slow I start and you'll understand. The reason I wrote this game up was that I was amazed that I survived, and more amazed that I snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Face it. I should have been wiped out early.
Since I don't play sc/bw very much any more, I won't be submitting many more battle reports. However, I plan to put together a good report for Age of Empires 2, as soon as I learn to play better.
Thanks for all the encouragement and the kind words. It was a lot more than I expected.
And a huge "Thank you" to Mark4 and the others who made this site so out*******standing.
