Chapter 1:
the beginning
I was only nine at the time, and the only thing in my mind, 'revenge', have blinded me in many ways. I was sent to the suburbs where my grandparents lived. From there, every sight of bugs triggered my anger. The stomping and swatting often woke my grandparent up, leaving them often worried about their troubled grandchild. I had no idea what and where these 'Zergs' were. But bugs sure came close. It was on one night, when I was burning roaches with firecrackers, grandpa took me to his room. He told me everything, about the current affairs of the universe. The stories about the lost territory, the mighty Protoss who lost there dominance a while back, the Vulcan and there abilities often made them targets of wars, and finally about the Overmind and those 'Zergs'. He told me that the Zergs were a race of heathens, bunch of animals living in their center, all controlled by the Overmind. They are hideous, ferocious, and kill at every moment possible. He then added that we were on a war with the Zergs, to protect one of our territories from being swarmed. Now THIS, was the beginning of my life long goal. It might have been too big for a child, but still, is killing the Overmind THAT hard?
At age of ten, I joined the military. Of course I wasn't allowed to fight, nor even train. I was a 'go-boy'. When someone says they are thirsty, they call me and say, "go, boy" When someone needs their boots shined, they call me then say, "go, boy." When they are lonely, they call me…yadda, yadda, yadda. I did mind that I was not fighting the Zergs, that I was not yet making those fitly bastards pay for my parents death; but the time was not right. I gained respect by 'fellow' infantry, and I got real close to this one special person. Johnny Ricco. I did not know who he really was, but he hung out with the lowly 'boys' of the military. I knew that a lot of the men feared him, but I never knew that he was a general.
I first noticed him when I was in trouble. I was supposed to fetch this person his boots, but I had forgotten the whole ordeal while daydreaming about my future. It was not the first time I had forgotten to do some chores, but I was always forgiven for I immediately finished my job afterward. This guy was mad, madder than a dog on 120 degrees Fahrenheit. He threw down the food he was shoving up his mouth and screamed, "You stupid BOY, can't you even do a simple job as fetching my God damn boots?" With trembling voice, I remember saying "Sorry, sir. This will not happen again. I will get those boots immediately." It obviously did not satisfy him, for he started to raise his arm. Then from the back, I heard a comforting, yet dominating voice yelling. "Stop! " The entire cafeteria hushed and the attention was focused on this man. Wearing a casual shirt and pants, it blended perfectly with the rest of the crew, but something made him stand out: his atmosphere. He had an aura of greatness, and others around him noticed that too. Getting up from the isolated table, he slowly walked toward Private Ryan and myself. Johnny, I mean General Ricco spoke to me for the first time. 'What's your name, son?" I replied in a low voice, "My name is Raynor, sir. Jim Raynor."
