This is a 5-round 1v1 Brood War tourney held by the Starcraft Elders

YoungBeard (me) picked Random, got Zerg and started at Top Right. DDDeadman picked Protoss at the last second and started at Bottom Right. This report is told from my point of view.

Since I don't really know DDD's playing style, I decide to use a standard build order, no quick rush or funny stuff, so I start a drone cooking and send my overlord scouting to the south. I build up to 8 drones, overlord, another drone, spawning pool, a few zerglings and alternate drones/zerglings and start saving for my 2nd hatchery. I send my second overlord to watch the center island, and a few zerglings out to watch over expansion sites. Around this time my first OL finds DDD at bottom right. I see two gateways, and a forge warping in, so I turn the OL around for fear of cannons and have it watch over his "gimme" expansion. I throw up a 2nd hatch, extractor, hydra den, and send a drone to expand to 12 o'clock. Since he's cannoning his chokepoint, I decide not to attack, but try to contain him and control the map. DDD sends out a late scouting probe, which I intercept at top left with a couple of zerglings, so he still doesn't know where I am. Or perhaps he wanted to start an expansion up there? I am not sure. I send my first four hydras and a bunch of lings down to his gimme to prevent him from expanding, and send reinforcements now and then, while I build my 12 o'clock expansion. I also upgrade to Lair at about this time. When I have 12 hydras + assorted lings down at his gimme, he tries to come out with 12 zealots. He loses about half and retreats, and I don't follow him into his cannon forest. I send reinforcements. He tries again a couple minutes later, with dragoon support, and I can see I will lose this time, so I retreat to the ramp above his gimme and send more reinforcements. He doesn't press the battle, so I continue to fortify that point. Around this time, he expands to the center with a shuttle, drives off my OL with a goon and proceeds to cannon up and warp in a nexus. Fearing reaver drops, I quickly lay down a spire and a queens nest, and build several spore colonies in my main and expansion. Meanwhile, he tries to break my containment forces again (now about 14 hydras and 20 lings), but does not succeed in his battle up the ramp. If I'm going to win easily, I know I have to crush his center expansion, so I amass a force of about 14 mutas and 2 OLs with hydras and lings. I find a weak spot protected by only one cannon at the center, blast the cannon with the mutas and drop the ground troops. At the same time, I send drones to my gimme and to bottom left to build hatcheries. The enemy expansion is quickly totalled. I pull my fleet back to protect my gimme expansion. DDD finds and destroys my bottom left expansion with a few zealots and goons, but does not contest my "gimme". Scouting determines that he hasn't built a nexus at his gimme, but is sending probes out from his main to collect minerals there. So he must he realy hurting for resources. He has also built a stargate and a few corsairs. I have a hive and greater spire now, so I morph more mutas, some scourge, and a few guardians, and send them to attack along with my containment force. I am beaten back with templars, corsairs, and goons -- but not before I took out his chokepoint cannons. So I send all my remaining zerglings and hydras to finish the job. Ah, victory is sweet. :)
