The Wavy Title

Strictley Ballroom

The Map: Ruins of the Ancients

The Map

The Parteners/Opponents:
Bob_The_Newt: (playing as AhscarTheGrouch) Randoms to Blue Terran, at 9:00.
Fractal_Wave: Selects Yellow Zerg, at 6:00.

The dance begins with both parteners sticking with standard steps, placing their feet firmly on the red steps labeled "1, 2, 3" on the ground. Fractal builds an overlord on 8, a pool on 9, six zerglings for scouting and then a 2nd hatchery on 13 or so.

His Overlord goes scouting clock-wise around the map, sees an SCV building something, raises its tempo and boogies out of there. A terran only has a few select steps it can dance against a zerg...however, they're very effective if performed properly. Fractal's first few lings slip on their yellow ties and dress shoes, and go out to scout.

Another Brick in the Wall-in
The six zerglings foxtrot in to Bob_The_Newt's base, and discover a sound that is truely offensive to their ears: Pink Floyd. To a man, the zerglings charge the marines, but the Wallin Bob has created with his three barracks is very effective, and the few marines behind them remove the zerglings with ease. The SCVS keep singing "..we don't need no education.." Fractal's Zerglings were just another brick in the wallin.

It would appear that Bob has decided on the classical Terran Infantry Rush Waltz. This is very powerful vs. the average Zerg Conga on most small land maps. However, Fractal decides to stick with the Standard Zerg Conga, instead of switching gears to the Lurker Rap or the 3-Hatch Zergling Tango.

The Blue Danube

Fractal deviates slightly from his steps to build three well-placed sunken colonies to protect his base from waltzers seeking an easy entrance to his mineral line. Other than that, the steps call for more Zerglings and more Drones.

Bob scouts with a marine squadron, notices the sunkens and takes position just outside of the creep. For now it's a stand-off. Bob's marines can't risk entering the sunkens without tank or medic support, and Fractal can't attack with his Zerglings unless he gains overwhelming numbers. Bob does his best to make sure the zerg Conga line never gets large enough to pose a threat by 'baiting' zerglings into his waiting marines. A few of the stupider zerglings charge out and get perforated by rifle fire before Fractal can order them back.

Fractal knows that it's only a matter of time until Bob dances up to medics and tanks. After that, the duet will becomes a solo, a la Bob_The_Newt. He decides to take a gamble. Twelve zerglings leave Fractal's base, heading out and around the containing marines. Another eight are readied in the yellow base, awaiting the command to go out and grooove.

Don't just stand there, bust a move! The 12 run around Bob's base, and hit from above, running through the wall-in to hit the waltzing SCVs. As Bob's forces dance back at triple time, the eight zerglings that Fractal kept in his base hit them from behind and nip at their ankles.

AC/DC> you all!

Alas, Bob's troops keep waltzing, whereas Fractal's lose their rhythem and get taken down by scvs, stimmed marines and medics. He's only gained a temporary breather, not an end to the dance. To make matters worse, an alert zergling saw a machine shop turning. Seems a new step called the "Seige Mode" will be seen on the battle field soon.

Fractal decides to change his step. A few hydras and lurkers are going to be needed. An extractor is ~finally~ thrown up, and a hydra den follows soon after. Cunningly, it is placed as far away from Bob's troops as possible.

Tanks for the Dance

~THOOM~

Can you feel that bass rumble? Fractal can, because it's the sound of a seige tank blasting away at his outlying sunken colony. His hydra den isn't done, and he doesn't have enough gas to produce them in numbers anyways. Time to tango with the Tank.

~pop~pop~pop~pop~ Fractal sends wave after wave of zerglings against the lone tank that is the core of Bob's groove. Soon the ground in front of the tank is soaked with yellow-tinted blood. The marines and medics surround the tank to prevent zerglings from getting at it. But it is not to be. To the tune of "Stayin' Alive", a zerglings discos through the marines and lays down the final blow. "Disco forever!" are his final words.

No sleep 'till BROOKLYN!

Bob, however, is undaunted. A second tank rolls up, along with two SCVs for repair purposes. They begin setting up turrets, as a recent Comsat noticed Fractal's ace in the hole. A lone lurker, morphing deep inside the zerg dance hall.

contrast is your friend.
By now, the tank push from Hell has been set up at Fractal's front door. Bob has two tanks, two scvs, two turrets, and innumerable marines and medics, listening to a variety of rock music. Black Sabbath, Marylin Manson, AC/DC...Fractal's drones are going deaf.

This base is a lost cause. 8 zerglings, the lurker and a drone sneak out of Fractal's base to bust a move or two in Bob's base. The drone moves off to the 12 natural to expand and keep the zerg music alive, while the 8 zerglings hit Bob's base from the north, and the lurker hits it from the south. She's Crafty...but dead. The 8 zerglings hit hard from the north, and begin pounding on an Engineering Bay that happend to be in their way. Fractal's Lurker boogies up to the comsat and gets on the mike. Behind the comsat is a bunker, with four marines chillin' outside of it. Bob sees the lurka and orders them in to the bunker. Turns out Fractal burrowed his lurka within Bunker range. Dude, that's, like so harsh man.

This sucked. . Bob lifts off his engineering bay, and the 8 zerglings hit the bunker for all it's worth. With the lurka's help, they get it to the yellow before they're removed with extreme prejudice by Bob's trencher marines, with a little help from the comsat. No appriciation for rap. None whatsoever. Nor for zerg. ~sigh~

Mopping the Dance Hall Floors

This sucked more. .
Bob's troops march in to Fractal's defunked base, singing a...rather interesting marching song. Tunes along the lines of "Rock is dead!", or "Don't like the drugs but the stimpacks like me!", or "You are the Perfect Drug! (Now Where's my Medic?!)" and such strange and modern stuff. Poor old Fractal is just stuck in the 80's.

Bustin' the Maad 80's Rap Flava!

The dance is almost over. The music has been turned down, and people are beginning to go home. Bob's getting bored.

Bob_The_Newt: Where's your Expansion?
Fractal_Wave: Nowhere ;)

But he's lying. A drunk SCV (darn malt liquor!) wanders by Fractal's 12:00 expansion, where 2 sunkens got built before Bob's marines rip down the spawning pool. A new pool is just morphing now. And the Terran crew is enroute to break it down vs. the 5-Star Zerg Rap Flava. Fractal has nothing to stop the push besides drones and creep colonies. Zerglings couldn't be produced fast enough to do anything. Time for the ~drum rolls~

SUNKEN COLONY PUSH OF DOOOOM!!!

You may laugh, but the 5-Star Zerg are determined to with this throw-down. And it almost works (well, Fractal almost gets 1 sunken up), although that is more from Bob laughing his @ss off so hard he lost his usually excellent unit control.

Basically, a sunken push consists of throwing down three or four sunkens colonies infront of the Terran's tanks, which usually seige up right at the edge of the creep. The colonies are in the minimum range of the tanks, and the supporting marines cant hit them because of the supporting sunkens behind them.

It is infinetely harder to do in real life.
This, however, was just plain cool.

Bob's Un-environmentally friendly! As firebats go through drones like the Sugar Hill Gang through "Rapper's Delight", Seige Tanks blast the hatchery apart, and then the wrecking crew comes in. Three SCVS strut in to kill the spawning pool and a stray Bengallas. Bob's a cruel ~unprintable~. But he's still my hero.
GG man!

Lessons

#1.) I played a weird, indecisive game. I should have gone for fast lurkers or three-hatch zerglings. And if I had wanted lurks I should have gotten gas much earlier. I think 3-hatch lings would have been effective...I would have lost lots of them to Bob's Wallin, but I think I could have powerd past him. Right YRM? (hehe...one of my few victories vs. YRM...)

#2.) Bob played like a pimp. Only advice for him is keep a base defense up on a wide-open map like that, and bring SCVS along on tank pushes. Other than that, Newt > Wave.

#3.) 80's rap owns you all.

#4.) If Willis or any other member of Victoria, B.C.'s 5-Star crew ever read this, hope you don't mind me using 5-Star. #5.) Mark4, Johhny, etc: sorry for posting this 9-billion times to get the html right...

All the best,
Fractal_Wave
