Ok, first off I will say for those that are expecting YRM type bubble coments you will be disappointed. I am not of the calibre of that most excellent image specialist, but I tend to think my writing can overcome that disadvantage.

Also you guys tend to be harsh on battle reports so I will try my best to do a good report even though it is only my first.
So on with the story then.
I was playing Ultima Online a month back when one of the counselors on the shard said that he was the best Starcraft player ever, first on the ladder in Starcraft, first in Brood Wars, etc. Naturally I didn't believe him, especially when he said he played under the name The~Insane~Frog and X'DsGrrr.... At the time I did not know much about Grrr.... and of course had I known he is French Canadian I might have realized he was lying right there and then. But his bragging was so completely out of hand that I called upon my egotistical friend Eugene to talk to him via ICQ into a game of Starcraft.
At first "Grrr...." who was going under the name of Ssendam in Ultima Online declined saying it was a waste of time but after a lot of provoking and prodding by both myself and Eugene we convinced him to play. On a side note I was able to get him to play by challenging his manhood and courage. :-)
So after loading up the PGL map Lost Temple I sat back with my munchies and screenshot button ready and waited for them to arrive. Ssendam entered the game under the name X'Ds~Insane:( while my friend Eugene came as VRAMSUCKS (in tribute to my own world class failings at the game.
Ssendam (whom I will refer to since he was obviously a poseur) selected the Zerg race while Eugene allowed fate to pick his race of destiny.
When the game started, Eugene was Orange Protoss in the West, while Ssendam was Yellow Zerg in the East. Here is the minimap for your convenience.

Ssendam started a surprisingly early expansion before even his spawning pool was finished. It surprised me but it allowedSsendam to get an early advantage in resources.
Meanwhile Eugene had already discovered Ssendams base and was moving in for an early cannon tower trap. If Eugene can get the towers up quick enough then then Ssendam would be contained until the hydras could arrive.

But it was not to be. Ssendam discovered the pylons and went right for the goods. After taking out the pylon, Eugene cut his financial losses and quit the two more pylons beaming in. Time for another strategy.
Feeling a bit braver, Ssendam sent periodic zerglings to scout out progress of Eugene. Two zerglings encountered a lone zealot scout outside of Eugene'sbase. Ssendam smelled blood.
After fending off a zergling rush in his own base using his probes, Eugene set up a cannon tower post to preserve his own expansion. Two zealots guard the coveted crystals as the cannons beam in. Zergling blood lies on the ground as Ssendam futiley tries to stop the expansion. Time for a new strategy for Ssendam this time.

But Ssendam must realize that Eugene is on his defensive heels because Ssendam boldly expands to the North and NorthEast corner of the map, thus preparing for a war of attrition and overwhelming ZERGINATION.
Ssendam does not quite fully comprehend the force he is dealing with yet as he walks into a bad situation. Armed with a few hydras and zerglings he once again attacks Eugenes expansion base. Highlighted in this picture is the waiting templar. I think you know what happens next.

Lightning, and lots of it leaves them all dead. Time for another technique?

Eugene has not been sitting idle, however, and immediately loads for the reaver drop. A perfectly placed drop just by the harvestors and the spawning pool seems to spell certain doom for Ssendam .

With relatively minor damage to the base, the reaver is destroyed. As you can see, the Mutalisks are now in full bloom and ready to try a new strategy for Ssendam . THE MUTA RUSH!
Realizing this new strategy, Eugene does what any sensible person would do. He makes cannon towers around his base for the impending muta attack. It is important to note that Eugene has not sent an expansion probe to the top left yet, and the same holds true for Ssendam in the bottom right, or
the lone zergling that guards the southern base. For now both warriors are intent on the battle at hand.
Despite the threat of Mutas, Eugene realizes they are relatively weak in offensive power and sends units to take out the expansions on the northern perimeter.
For some reason Eugene had a miscue with his commands and does not send the all-important templars into the battle with their zealot brethren. While they do finally arrive, they only cause minor inconvenience rather than pose real threat to
Ssendam.

The tide keeps coming as Eugene realizes he must stop the incoming supply of minerals from the two expansion bases. Wave after wave of zealots, dragoons, and archons come up. It seems that Eugene is a little uncautious, however, as he
spreads his troops a little too thinly.
Eugene penetrates more deeply into the front by using a dragoon platoon as backup for his archon while his zealots rush ahead to attack the ground troops. Overall an effective strategy and Ssendam is seen rushing reinforcements from his primary and secondary base.

The wave of Eugenes forces continues as Ssendam has to bring reinforcements from the ventral sacs of the overlords, thus delaying his future strategy of landing a beachhead somewhere on Eugenes starting base. Notice that although he has ventral sacs and speed upgrade that he does not take the
bottom right and top right expansions. The expansion war is now 2-1 for Ssendam .
Ssendam is by no means losing this battle, however, as his hydras finish off the latest attack by Eugene. Perhaps it is time for an attack of his own?
There is simply no time for that as Eugene continues sending dragoon platoons to harrass Ssendam . Meanwhile, Eugene is carefully building his tech to dangerous protoss levels.
Ssendam is in trouble as Eugene begins an assault on the Northern base, the loss of which would balance the minerals war. It is important that Ssendam defend it.
Once again Ssendam fends him off, but the strain of the attack is evident. Both sides must find a new strategy.

As a yellow ball of defense mounts at the north east chokepoint, Eugene is busy expanding into the long
forgotten north west corner. Ssendam still hasn't rebuilt his destroyed base, and now the expansion war threatens to even at 2-2. Seen on the screen is Ssendam saying "Grrr... plan b".
A lull in the action occurs while we see Ssendams strategy build. His focus on attack is so great that he still forgets the destroyed expansion, the empty expansions south and southeast, and also forgets that his minerals in his primary base are now depleted. Perhaps it is his way of viewing impending victory?
Eugenes forces are building up also in preparation of whatever attack is about to take place. There certainly isn't a ground forces entry point anymore.

Zealots prepared, Eugene sends a flow of them to take out the Northern expansion once and for all. It is a key tactical strike which Ssendam should be prepared for.
The fighting gets very bloody as the zealots take on the hydralisks, while the dragoons and archons attack the mutalisks and guardians.

The attack fails as Ssendam adequately fends him off. After this, Eugene is visibly disturbed and comments about it. The northern strikes may have to be postponed or abandoned altogether.
With a break in the action finally, Ssendam flies his
guardians to the logical southern attack point.
The guardians on their way, Ssendam has 8 overlords with a total of 32 hydralisks waiting to be unloaded in enemy lines. Sourges stand guard in case enemy fighters happen to be patrolling.

In a move that can only be described as careless, Ssendam sends his guardians to their certain death without the support of mutalisks. The scouts start to make short work of the guardians.
Going for broke, Ssendam sends his overlords in belatedly and attempts to land. He has to unload his hydralisks quickly if he wants to do any damage at all.
The hydras land and start to destroy Eugenes base from the south up.
Psi-storm ends the threat very fast, almost in an embarressing fashion. It seems that Eugenes templars are going to take more than hordes of hydras to beat.

A very successful time for Eugene results in his fending off the attack and killing the remaining overlords with his scouts. Ssendam still has not expanded, and now has but one source of income.
The lack of expansion prowess by Ssendam becomes fatally errenous as Eugene now takes the southern base with a parade of little probes.

It doesn't take long before Eugene has built another stronghold on the southern expansion, and this
means certain doom for Ssendam .
Ssendam seems intent on ignoring the bottom right expansion and/or rebuilding the one he lost so long ago. Instead he attacks the top left base, but finds some nasty templars once again.
The mass of yellow moving south from the northern expansion is a mess of mutalisks and overlords with hydralisks in them again. For some reason unknown to anybody, Ssendam ignores this invasion of his only source of income and goes for the gold on Eugenes main base.

Ssendams shows reason #612 why not to cluster your mutalisks. Psi storm wreaks havoc on Ssendams troops again, and soon the mutalisks are killed. But the swarm of hydras is enough to take out the base.

The mutas are gone, but the mass of yellow hydras are finishing off the remaining resistance.
That doesn't stop Ssendam from ignoring micromanagement still, and Eugenegets in some parting shots.
It appears that Ssendam is victorious... but not only has Eugene destroyed his Northern expansion, but Ssendam has absolutely no income. And the funny thing about protoss is that one probe can warp in an entire new base in just under a minute...

Eugene is known for his flaws of judgement as well. He uselessly shoots at this stupid suken colony instead of attacking the main defenseless base. Meanwhile Ssendam's hydras are trapped on the main base since attempting to leave through the choke point would spell certain death for them anyway.
And here you see Eugene completely rebuild his main base in a matter of seconds. It's all over now but the crying.

Eugene meticulously keeps his distance from the spore towers as he takes out key infrastructure. In a vain attempt to survive longer Ssendam makes more spore towers.

After the game Ssendam admitted that he was only X'DsGrrr.... cousin and pleaded with me not to make a battle report. But I did anyway. When I found out about this website I realized that his destiny of lying would become complete with this br.
Well, I hope you enjoyed my first br and with a little training I hope I can get some funny captions like YRM, except I am not a photoshop guy, more of an HTML guy.
Lessons Learned
1. Liars are found out in the end
2. For templars use queens
3. When you lose an expanion, rebuild it
4. When expansions are open, take one
5. Contain protoss or you may lose
6. Netscape sucks shit since java crashed my window while I was writing this.
P.S. YourRoleModel rocks, maybe next time I will use bubbles if I can figure it out. :-) |
