Ah, well...from the unknown *sigh* author.. Still, this is all you've always wanted; No fancy frame story(I've heard many people don't like that), no pix that take ages to load, just a report that takes ages to read. Ahem..., yeah...
Anyway. T_mac offered a 2v2, attracting ADQ3 and a chobo'of'doom^^. I entered the game room, saw that Dark Temple was the map of choice, and witnessed the arrival of tiamatic and headless_clown as observers as well as the revelation that Mr.chobo was Whoop. At least he said so. OrcManiac also joined the game. After loads of time, it was agreed on that orc and adq fight against tmac and whoop. It promised to be an intersting game.
Early game
whoop found himself as brown terran at 12:00, his partner tmac was Zerg at 6:00.
Of team Protoss, Orc spawned at 3:00. adq at 9:00(where else). This team showed good coordination in the builds, both doing a double gate double pylon. Tmac went early-expand, getting a pool with his 12th or so drone, and starting a 2nd hatch at his natural almost directly after that. A choice that later on proves fatal. He also OL-scouts adq. Whoop starts of with depot, depot, rax at his choke, and later on constructs a rax on tmacs plateau for support.
Zealous infantry the 1st
The first action of the game is initiated by team protoss, doing a gang-bang on tmacs natural. Even 2 newly spawned sunkens cannot save the exp, one dies in morphing, the other at the hands of Adun's warriors. The Zealots eventually perish to sunkens at Tmac's main, but thwart the expansion attempt. Both protoss now go tech by building core and forge. Meanwhile, Whoop has gotten a factory, and a floatable cc, which eventually goes to his natural, where it is fortified with a tank and a bunker.
Zealous infantry the 2nd
And the second wave is coming in! 14 Zealots from Team protoss, attacking Tmac's choke defense, consisting of 4 lings, a bunker and an SCV. However, the superior Zealot force has problems getting up the ramp; the lings are in the way and more are coming to replace those dispatched. Menawhile the bunker slaughters Zealot after Zealot, until finally they brake through the lings, dispatch first the Scv then the bunker. The remainder of the force - 5 Zealots - attack the base, but stand little chance against the 2 sunkens. It was a breathtaking example of what chokes can do to you.
Tech-ups
Sneaky ADQ has taken the time during the battle to tech to temps; this may prove the deciding blow. He also expands to his natural, his first expansion after the long early game. Orc has not been idle, either. He, too, takes his natural, but not only that: He has added a 3rd gate, and two new robotics factories are just waiting to turn out some cybernetic maggots. it looks dire for t-mac, though not for whoop; his expansion has been running, and his defenses are strong. Interesting is that he has built his Depots in a line along the wesstern side of his plateau, an arrangement that could spell death to drops.
Mid Game
A short summary: Team protoss has taken both of its naturals, adq isgetting temps and multiple gates (six at the end), orc is going for reaver/shuttle with 3 gates and 2 rob fac.
T_mac is still pretty much in ling-phase, although hydras are starting to be spawned. Whoop has his natural, as well as 3 factories, which he uses for goliaths, tanks and vultures. He is also adding a 2nd starport to the one he has already got.
The dark menace
Whoop and tmac have decided that mining operations at orc's natural areto be suspended, and assemble a force of vultures and lings in the centre of the map. Unfortunately for them, adq has got a few DTs, which he sends to tmacs choke, where no overlord is present. It takes some time until they are noticed, and a scan by whoop fails to exterminate the force. But tmac has newly-morphed hatch at the choke, and a freshly spawned overlord finally allows the vulture-ling army to put an end to the dark menace.
Death of a choke defense
Whoop choses to expands again and floats a cc to the NW island. It is not until some time later, however, that he flies in a workforce.
ADQ and Orc lay the smack down at tmac's choke: a goon- HT group from adq moves into the valley, but the real strike is executed by orc, who drops two worms of death to eliminate the two sunkens as well as the hatchery. Only then do adq's forces move in, but they do not finish off the main. instead, Orc collects the remaining reaver and drops it on the peon line, which kills all of the peons, but nothing more (as if that wasn't enough ;-) )
Cliffhanger
After this, Whoop seizes the initiative by kicking the turbo in. The turbo-newbie. #1 goes to Orc, but is eventually dispatched by drops; but not without disrupting mining operations for a period of time. #2 is a present to adq; here whoop shows us why he owns: he simultaneously manages the turbo-newbie and a wraith attack on orc's detectionless probes. Both attacks are ultimately a failure, but he had reason enough for desperate action, and I dare say most people would have done a lot worse.
Almost immediately, adq counterattacks and "persuades" whoop to lift off and vacate the NW island.
End Game
Setting up a push
In an all-out attempt, Whoop and T_mac move in on the mound of Orc's natural's valley. A bunker is constructed and multiple tanks, hydras, goliaths and even a few vultures are brought in. But one of adq's DTs has seen the troops move in, and Team Protoss make ready to drop the hammer on the push base.
Setting it down again
It hits moments after the first arclite projectile of the push is fired: at a cannon west of orc's nexus. Orc drops 3 shuttles worth of reavers and zealots south of the expansion, his reavers exterminate all of the hydras before dying; they are dead, but they removed a major force of the push. Adq's vast army hits in a two-pronged attack: the main force of goons and HT hit from the SW, while a small DT commando sneaks in and starts carving their names into the tanks in the NE of the battlefield. Their unseemly engravements are soon purged as the tanks explode. Couldn't have everybody carving messages into the property of the army, could we?
Guess what happens to an out-numbered force of goliaths, vultures and marines when goons and HT move in? Yep.
T_mac and Whoop declare their surrender and ask all observers to leave.
I'm not stupid enough to think I'm better than any of the players, but still...
Lessons learnable:
1. Better detection would have helped a lot. In both of their attacks, DTs were much too successful
2. Somebody who has 4 Factories can't spare 2 tanks for his buddies choke defense? Nah, c'mon.
3. Firebats would have been a treat, but also a risk, so that's only an alternative.
Plz don't grudge me that I mostly critizise you, whoop, but t_mac had too limited resources to do much, and the winners hardly deserve critizism. Rectifications are welcome.
