I like melee a lot. That's pretty much the only game I play on Starcraft. Ladder games are all about Zerg vs. Zerg nowadays and it's really getting absurd. Also melee takes off the pressure of absolutely having to win or else your precious rating is ruined. Also melee games tend to be more on the "good manner" side.
I just finished off playing a turtle on hunters (turtling is soooo stupid), and I wanted to play a real 1 on 1 game. So I go into a game called "1v1 YoU and Me." So I join, and he has quite an impressive record, about 140-20-3 or something like that. He didn't kick me out so I guess he wanted a challenge. Most people who see a 280-50-20 record will usually kick the person out. He had no ladder rating, but judging skill by ratings is dumb.
He randoms while I switch to my fave race Protoss as the counter goes down to 2 seconds. Usually I change from Zerg to Toss at the last second to force a TvP matchup. Anyway, I go with a standard two gate b/o with a quick gas after. I scouted out and saw he built 2 hatcheries, a pool, and started another hatch. I thought I was gonna be raped by mass zerglings (which works very well against Toss on hunters) so I quickly put up a forge and researched 1/0 asap.
He scouted me with a speeded zergling and somehow got into my base. He didn't see much so far, just a cybercore, 3 gates, and a forge in the middle of upgrading. Once I saw the speeded zergling I thought definitely that I was gonna be mass linged against.
After this I put up a citadel followed quickly by an archives. Notice that I hadn't built any dragoons. I've pretty much lost faith in them going against any Zerg. I hadn't spent any gas whatsoever on units, so building three archons was no sweat.
At this point I believe I was 1/1 and started 2/1 after the archives. Then I double forged for mass upgrading. I sent about 12 zealots and 2 archons ahead to his base and killed the expansion at his natural with no problem. His mass lings were toast and he hadn't upgraded his hydras yet.
I also saw a drone running towards the right side of the map for some reason, and fortunately I found his expansion at 3o'clock and ripped it down. I left my force outside his base to play containment for a while, which worked for about 5 minutes. Then I was safe to expand to the starting point above me with two cannons followed by nexus.
He finally broke my containment with about 24+ hydras but not before losing about a little more than half his force. I ran my archons back to my main. He then found my expansion with a zergling and sent his remaining hydra over there. Those two cannons stalled them a bit and I ran my probes away from my nexus. I ran my speed upgraded zealots and an archon to save the day and they did, leaving about 6 or 7 zealots left along with my archon. I rebuilt the cannons and left an archon standing guard behind them.
Throughout the game, it was all expansion finding and taking em down. I ripped down about 4 expansions with very little defense. His hydra were only 1/1 at that point while I was actually 3/3 and I started to upgrade shields.
He finally switched over to mutas with no hydra support. I waltzed into his main with about 18 zealots and 2 archons against 12 muta and about 5 sunkens. Boy, zealots just totally own sunkens once they're upgraded. And in about 3-4 blasts from my archons the muta were dead. While this was happening he sent guardians to my base and killed off my citadel. This was very cruel and cheap because my archon couldn't reach them, and my goons were unranged. I wished I left a couple of storms here and there.
Soon enough his main was gone and I called gg. He responded the same. His guardians killed all my buildings on the outer edge but he eventually had to move in closer, so they weren't much of a problem after all.
After this, it was a game of cat and mouse of finding newly built hatcheries in an attempt to stall for a few minutes. We talked for a while and talked about my strat. I weighted the difference between goon/templar and zealot/archon, and I concluded that zealot/archon takes a helluva lot less micro, time, and economy.
Lessons learned:
1) Always always always outupgrade Zerg. A 0/0 battle between Protoss and Zerg will favor Zerg tremendously. Always get 1/0 asap.
2) Archons own zergling and muta with no trouble. Ling/muta is a widely used Korean strat, so archon will totally rape.
3) Watch out for muta rush. Zealots can't hit them o_O
4) If you do go zealot/archon keep storm around just in case, if you have the extra resources.
5) Archons are very good at wearing down hydras while Zealots do the big damage. They also clear the way of zerglings, so the zeals can go straight for the hydras.
6) It's zealot vs. hydra. Not goon vs. hydra. After this game I'm gonna concentrate more on zealots. Goons are sooooo much STUPIDER also.
7) It would've been MUCH smarter to expand to my natural, I dunno what I was thinking.
8) Hmm, I forgot to get gas at my expansion. I finally noticed this when I started building goons to fight the guardians.
Man this report sucked. I print screened the Victory! screen but I didn't know how to put the picture in. I thought I could use .bmp or something. Oh well, I liked this game a whole lot so I just wanted to talk about it. |
