That's nuts, I guess he underestimated you!

Excellent report and I liked the way you explained it all. Like a teacher in a classroom kind of way. Very simple and easy to understand. Simple pictures as well. Good show. 8

Very nice report. Quite enjoyable as a whole, but I must admit I found the spelling/grammar mistakes really grating. Especially the proliferation of the word "destoryed." Also, this: "At the same time, I teched to templars with storm and speed," I'm interested in seeing these speed templar. o_O Also, there were quite a few points I remember where you mentioned things like "units from main, units in main, units to main" and so forth. I'm overly anal about that, though, so take it how you will.

Personally, while the report was well-done as yours always are, I didn't enjoy it much because the game itself had no real merit to me. You beat a mineral hacker, that IS impressive, I guess, but it's just not enough to me. I'm not saying this to put the report or you down, just to give my opinion. I guess, in a way, since I know you're a pretty competent player I just expect you to be able to beat a pubbie hacker, irrespective of which hack they may be using.

The pics and format were very nice and presented the information quite well. I liked those aspects an awful lot.

A quick strategic insight: fast expanding on temple PvZ is definitely worthwhile. Yeah, there's the cliff, but if you're THAT concerned about him cliffing you you can just go sair/reaver. Also, since you said you didn't want to expand first because you were concerned about your cliff, you're decision to expand after your 2 gate rush didn't work is extremely confusing. First off, that build is rather weak against any tech choice (especially muta) as well as hydra, and it takes away the map control you've attempted to establish by going 2 gate.

On the whole, I enjoyed the report, but not overly so. I'm still debating the rating, I'm pretty much split between a seven and an eight. It really feels like a seven to me, based on enjoyment, but with the effort involved and just how nicely put together it is I'm not sure if I want to give it that.

yeah that was a good quote...

Can't wait til Starcraft 2 reports still filling the pages of this site.

I think the main reason things have slowed down is obviously less people (duh) play BroodWar, and therefore strategy discussion is proportionately lessened as well.

#16 [165799]

Personally I think a big reason is that the site still looks (and works) as though it was made almost 10 years ago, which is okay for us oldies, but not for new visitors.

About the report, I thought it was excellent. The format was just great - black on white text can still work - and the pictures were clear and crisp (except for that one little red arrow/lasso you drew on paintbrush). I thought the writing was fine; obviously not your best but compensated for by the subject matter (namely, your strategic digressions and occassional humour).

All in all, for me a 9.

how much better would this report have been if raider focused more on shit talking to the mineral hacker?

even still, very good report. grammatical errors slowed me down some and without the shit talking the game seemed a little pointless. but the strategies you came up with were cool and most of the writing was very solid and easy to follow.

Great report! I'm thankful that there hasn't been a gold hack for Warcraft III yet or else games like DotA would be ruined.

Actually that wouldn't be such a bad thing.

I agree Dagomar, regarding the site. The bar has been raised for interactive web sites. I am certainly capable of making br.com on par with what the top sites do today, we'll see how much progress I can make.

I started redoing the site, and have a copy of it running on my machine at home now, and I think the results will be impressive when I finally finish.

Thanks for commenting everyone.

Keanu, seemed kind of pointless to include my own trash talk when the guy could not respond. As I mentioned, if he had been talking, that indeed would have been gold ;)

As far as reasons for this site not being as popular as it once was is not in its design. I can't really see someone coming to a website and being like, well it doesn't look flashy, so I'm not coming here again. A lot of the popular sites are very simple. TeamLiquid and LiquidPoker are definitely not the most technologically advanced sites out there, yet they look good and their great content drives the traffic to them.

On the other hand you have huge overblown monstrosities like wgtour.com, sclegacy.com, and battle.net. Even with broadband, those sites take forever to load (especially wgtour). Yet their traffic is high also (not sure about sclegacy) because of the content.

battlereports.com has had relatively low traffic in the main section because there is less content and for some people the content is less relevant. Back before replays, battle reports were the only way to get an inside look at games played by better players, especially with JV and mark4 getting access to competition games. Now we no longer have that access; the content is carried by other sites, and those sites got the traffic.

To drive up traffic we would need more report submissions as well as more content that is relevant to the average user of a game. Right now the market for mid-skill-level game reports is rather low because people who play BW are either interested in the pro scene or play BGH and don't care about much of anything. Our audience would be casual to advanced gamers who want to read about games of people who play like they do and better. Yes, those people would enjoy some fun ffa battle report, but reports like that will rarely drive traffic to a site.

To illustrate my point: psy made a report about SC2 at Blizzcon. I am willing to bet anything that report drove a lot of traffic here because its content was relevant to the BW community. The look of the site did not stop anyone from reading.

I went on longer than I initially intended, but my basic point is that we need to worry about content first and the look of the site second because it's the content that drives people to a site.
#22 [165805]
user-142o1sk.cable.mindspring.com
Raider, I agree with your post. Content is as they say, king. I am not sure Dag was referring to the gfx design of the site, but I do agree that we need more interactivity. Good design can only help, but it will not make or break a site, as long as the design is usable.

In regards to interactivity there's no reason that we can't switch to a rating system that allows everyone to give a vote. The ratings will be incompatible with the old reports, and the old reports will just be archived to preserve their ratings, and the history of it all.

More than gfx design, I think what we need to improve is USABILITY so that its extremely easy to find content and create content.

User accounts may provide us with some more functionality as well that people would like.

Starcraft 2, and an active community of players that want to hash out strategy is one of the most important requirements though I think.

#30 Greth[165813]
152.66-243-81.adsl-dyn.isp.belgacom.be
Hacking is becoming a really big problem for older games. The biggest of these problems is that hacking is not seen as a 'violation' any more. Younger gamers don't see the problem or dishonesty in using a hack.
This is not just the problem with starcraft, but a great deal of other games, especially FPS'.
A lot of kids do a little bit of hacking 'on the side' and 'just for fun'. This mentality is very dangerous, but not a lot is done to prevent it from spreading more and more...

The report is very well-done and enjoyable. However!

It feels like polished propaganda to me. You started off by talking about all the n00bs who swarm to BW as "the next best thing" to SCII. That's fine, it's pretty much true. Then you talk about their new tactics, which veteran players need to survive. It sounds a little fishy, since veterans rape everybody and their mother, but okay, I thought maybe it was for dramatic effect. Finally, the new "tactic" brought to the table is revealed to be a mineral hack. Uh-huh. So THAT's where hackers came from. I was wondering why I didn't see any before the SCII announcement...

You don't like n00bs, do you?

I have an interesting replay I could submit. Me and two friends against two insane computer players in WC3. We lost almost every minor skirmish until a quite nicely timed clash towards the end.

Would a 3v2c replay be frowned-upon over here?

i just downloaded this hack. its really really sophisticated and has tons of options, getting minerals as zerg from some kind of exploit (it kills a larvae and you get 514 minerals for it) is one of its features

it even auto-sends all your peons to mine when the games starts, wicked

oh btw here is an easy way to spot this hack if your suspecting it: watch the replay and see if the other player ever cancels morphing larvae, killing the egg (which pretty much doesnt ever happen in a normal game)

Dear Raider:
I had a similar experience in Fastest map. I joined a 1v1 Fastest game and my oponent PREDATOR (with capitals) chose to be zerg as i remained random. In the game he was 11 and i was 5, after i checked his stats, he was 60-0-0 and i was like, how is this possible? and i realized that after i did fast nexus build, after i made a few cannons to stop a possible rush, i was able to beat him. i have the replay. Anyway that isnot the point. After i sent the replay to blizz, i checked his stats again to see the 1 loss (60-1-0) but his score showed 0-0-0 !! (i play in us-west) so now, i am really confused to what just happened, and also my oponent did not say a single word. if you want to see the replay i have it.

Hi guys!

There is an easy way to spot hackers: I wrote a web site to it: BWHF. You can upload your replay, and it analyzes it and finds hackers and hacks in it.
You can check it out here:
http://icza.fw.hu/hu.belicza.andras.bwhf.BwhfEntryPoint/BwhfEntryPoint.html

Actually the replay will not be uploaded but analyzed on your computer in your browser.

I made a howto use BWHF video, you can watch it here:

I liked that replay, I am new to SC (been playing like 8 months), but it's honestly not because I heard SCII was coming out and wanted to jump on the bandwagon. It really was just my first foray into RTS, and I have fallen in love.

It is, admittedly, harsh love, though. It is really hard to step into a fairly difficult game, only to realize that the players all have at least a few years of experience on you. But I have busted it out. I have played many times, both on Bnet and LAN. I am really proud of even the modest level of skill I have. Although my win-loss is like 1-3, I am still proud of myself for even beating anyone online.

And so it both sickens me and hurts me when I hear about people cheating online. I think about how rough it has been even the last 8 months or so, and then think to myself "Then there are people who have been playing, and even competitively, for YEARS now, and these scrubs think they deserve to get online and just get victories for nothing?"
I dunno, it really, really burns me. And sorry if I am all "a n00b and therefore must be stupid in real life." But IDK. Two things burn me real bad online, cheaters and whiners.
