I haven't played this game in ages. Now I absolutely have to play! My playing style is a little different than yours. Or is that a product of the characters involved?
One thing I have to ask, are you doing any save and reload when soldiers get killed? I try to avoid that when plausible.
If I get made into a soldier I'd like to carry a rocket launcher. I love this gun. It's dirt cheap and insanely powerful. One large rocket will KO cyberdisks, reapers, and chrysilids. The thing you have to understand is you don't use it like a FPS rocket launcher. You kneel and aim shot. With the super high accuracy, you are almost garenteed a hit and kill.
If I don't have the stats, which my be hard to find, then just make me a grunt with a rifle and grenades. I prefer rifles over pistols because of autofire. Pistols may do more damage over all, but you have to shoot four times each turn. That is five actions that aliens can reaction fire to! Putting out six bullets from your rifle is only two actions they can react to. This makes rifles better when rooting around in UFOs.
Oh yeah, personality. Okay, let's give you something really fun to work with. My guy worships the color blue as a god. As an act of devotion he likes to wrap blue sashes around various places on his body, like some kind of RPG character. He also wears an artifical skunk tail on himself that is about two and a half feet long. It's connected by wires up his jacket so it waves around like it was real. There, that's should give you some nice fodder for interparty conflicts!

Now that I've had more time to think, here are some more additions to my character to finish him off as completely eccentric.
He also wears artifical skunk ears which move around in a life-like manner due to wires running through his jacket. They flatten against his head when angry or sad, perk up when excited, etc.
He likes having his "furry appendages" rubbed, or being scritched behind his "ears".
He wears a collar and leash. The leash is wrapped under his belt then hooked on his collar. Anyone who touches the leash without permission gets pounded. Many times. Hard.
He likes being in the dark because "grues are cute and fuzzy".
Speaking of cute and fuzzy, he'll be sympathetic to Reapers because they are "cute, cuddly foxxies". It won't stop him from shooting them but he will be bummed about it.
If you capture a Reaper alive then he will tame it and make it a base pet. He will name it, "Princess".
That's it I think. Feel free to make him the biggest, flamingest furry you can imagine. |

You said you got the version from Under-dogs right? Well once you get it on your computer there is a small file with a yellow Icon. Use that to play the game and it will work fine.
I'd like to be a soldier eventually. A SS would be cool. After reading the first BR I started searching for it before I read the second one.

I've tried my own game of this, and I would have to say:
Please for the love of god, EldritchEvil, Don't make me an X-COM soldier..
Why? I got hit by an alien base assault on me in January. 14 defending soldiers and a tank, and four survivors.
Of course, two of those four are still alive by June 1, so maybe it isn't that bad.. except for one of them getting a 55 day recovery time. And he's the best man I have.. |

As a little profile on m'self...
I play Halo 2, and I love to snipe.
But, I'm constantly plagued with crappy teammates who don't cover me when I go for the snipe, and I die.
I always get the sniper rifle, but there is always some A-hole right behind me, and I get lit up, when a little "Hey, there's a guy behind you." or a casually tossed grenade could have prevented the whole now-they-have-both-the-snipes-and-the-rocket-launcher mess.
At that point (well the point immediately after I respawn), teammate verbal abuse ensues.
Anyway... I don't know how you'll get that in there, but GL and HF and all that other newb phrase shit. And, I don't mean I want my guy to die.
