Like the Civ3 reports, it's amazing how world conquest is more interesting than a 1v1 on lost temple :D
Brilliant work - I loved the pictures (fav ones include the javelins in the beginning, and the roman light infantry waiting for a massive cavalry charge and death) and could potentially be a good story as well.

| Wow. I've never played the game before, and the story style really doesn't tell me much about it, but for some reason the report makes me want it. The pics were pretty good, and the sheer amount of good writing made this an easy ten. I haven't really been keeping up on the reports lately, but if there are gonna be more of these, I'll have to check in periodically at least. :D |

Hrm, I read it all the way through, but I didn't really like it. Something about it didn't interest me. Maybe you need to describe things more during the battles? You seem to lump all of your description into one paragraph then go and tell what happened; perhaps you should mix the two together. I dunno, it just didn't do it for me ;
I suppose what I'm trying to say is that that you nailed the writing style that you were going for, I just didn't like it much ;]

I'm sorry for not commenting on this Lucky, but I completely forgot about it since I read it right around Christmas.
I thought it was fantastic. At some points you seemed a little redundant (describing the horrors of battle), but I absolutely loved the opening screenshots and descriptions of your battle in Appolonia. The way you detailed your flanking move, while showing a shot of enemies running into your calvary, really stood out in my mind.
I didn't like the 'Greek City States' portion as much, even though it was much more epic, only because I thought the fight at Appolonia was enough for a stand-alone 9 report. Some pictures like the "start battle" one were a little odd but the closeups were beautiful. Just a great job overall, 10. Please write more of these. |

This is a truly excellent battlereport, perhaps the best of 2004. I love the writing - it's quite excellent, and though it could be trimmed a bit in some parts it still is pretty moving, oddly enough. Very dramatic. The game doesn't seem historically accurate in some spots - ie. the gross numbers involved ( a legion contained some 5 thousand men on average, and the Imperial army generally numbered some 300,000 men ). However it's still absolutely amazing, and you communicate the action very, very well.

Yeah, those numbers always pissed me off too.
They used the total war engine on the history channel to show how the battles were fought, and the screen would be literally filled with a swarm of scarlet shields and steel helmets, all moving with a purpose.
The biggest battle in total war can be somewhere along the lines of ~4,000 vs ~4,000. They limit the size of the armies in the campaign map, a general can only lead around sixteen units or about 1200-1500 men, whatever figure comes first. But this general can be aided in battle by reinforcing armies, as can his adversary, at a maximum of two per side. So you have three generals vs three generals.
The game slows down A LOT the more units are on the board. Still, this is better than having a 1,000 vs 1,000 fight that was the largest in Medieval. I have a cool replay of the danes [yes, the danes!] holding off the Holy Roman Empire, outnumbered about 600 to 5000. It was rainy, we had the hills, and they could only bring so many troops to bear at a time because of stupid restrictions. Eventually I retreated when every unit reached 'exhaustion' from so much fighting. They might be Danes but they weren't spartans!
Speaking of which, Sparta might fall in the next installment. I haven't played that much yet. |

One pet peeve, a phalanx is a formation, not a unit. It would be a unit of hoplites forming a plalanx, or whatever the name of the actual unit was..
One more pet peeve, it is a TBS game, with real-time combat. |
