Yes, this is a long report. Unnecessarily long for the most part. While some of the action covered is appropriate, there are long stretches where you commit the sin of reporting free for alls. Tell me what is wrong with a string of paragraphs like this:
"wakiki sends the 5 goliaths left at his main towards his 12 main expansion. He also builds a factory and repairs the one there at said expansion. SCV production is dragging at both resource nodes, however."
It's the 'b' word man: boring! The only way I've found around this is to just cover the action. Allowing a dozen siege tanks to come out of nowhere doesnt matter as much in a free for all. This report could have been half the size. At about the halfway point I wanted the thing to end. Less talk, more action. Without it you are going to lose your audience.
Why did you surrender anyway? Aedile was completely destroyed and he ended up winning it? And then the 'attack after i surrender' stuff? That's just underhanded man. That's like ZerG~LinG level treachery.
Finally, please learn what a pun is. Please.
Still I could see all the effort put into this, so I would hesistate to call it silver.

As much as I really, really, REALLY want to give this an 8 (I'm in it), I'm going to give it a 7 - with painful reservations. Reasons follow: you seemed to try too hard to make the text funny, you missed a lot of action (I know it's hard... but I kept waiting for the random battle between my marines and bunny's ultras), and the alt-text didn't seem to add anything to the report.
Now let me go on with the good points. Great layout, and it was easy to read. I was in it. You started the battlereport really strongly. Consistent mini-map updates and clear explanations kept me updated on what EVERYONE was doing - no small feat. Learning what happened to the rest of the people in that game was worth the time I spent reading it.
In fact, I was considering a 9 right up to the point where you quit (the first time, before the backstab). I felt that you probably got tired writing the BR at that point, and the quality started to degrade.
Things that could have made it a 9: a mini-section following the guerrilla marines, totalling their awesome kills and route. A mini-map explanation of how many expansions I held where and how often, plus a running count of constructed CCs (ok, this is a LITTLE biased towards myself). You could have summarised the build orders, and put current supply for each player next to the mini-maps.
Oh, another good thign you did was update us on producing bases. It was important when Ling and wakiki lost their production centers and were too lazy to rebuild them. I can't believe how long I didn't have production at a base but running from Ling on the high ground in the south west.
All in all, I enjoyed the report tremendously. But if I showed it to someone unassociated with the site, I'd say 'this is a good example of gold reports you can find on BR.com - a little unrefined, but you can see how much fun a report is reading this.' |

Unfortunately that was the last "lol" spot. Still, an excellent report. I was able to follow the action fairly well. I didn't notice that it got worse after you were out.
A few more pictures. I think every battle should have at least one picture. If it's a minor encounter, just make one.
Somewhat inaccurate description of that 30 minutes, however :P
What actually happened was that while Ling was looking for my expansions, my Battlecruisers were chasing his Carriers, and he was running all over the place. He had an observer following my Battlecruisers around, but I let him have it so that he would know where they were so that he could attack them. Unfortunately, he was using it to avoid them. I kept begging him to fight be so that we could get it over with, but he said no, not unless I don't fight with my Goliaths, and only if I fight in the middle. During that 30 minutes, I kept refusing that offer, thinking that I might be able to get him in a situation and force him to fight my BCs. Of course, that didn't happen, so after a while I just agreed to fight him in the middle, without Goliaths. (He kept saying that it wouldn't be a fair fight if I used my Goliaths). Of course, I still had 30 or so Goliaths on high ground to fight them with, but I really didn’t feel like chasing them around for another hour.

It's not length that nets golds, or makes it better...but when I'm reading a report, and getting into it, and it rather abruptly ends...well, it's rather disappointing. I have to make concessions of course...Prae/Raider's Civ reports and Decay's Exile reports ended rather abrubtly for me, but the former two were rather long and I can hardly expect them to submit an entire game report in one shot. Also, for SC reports, it's more of a usage of the length. Like...well, macroing. You can't hope to one base zerg all game long and beat an expanding terran, but an expanding terran who squanders his money building useless tech isn't gonna be doing that much better, is he? Length doesn't instantly mean good, but if it's used well it *does* add to the report. Also, short doesn't instantly mean bad, because if you wield it well, you can say a lot. But when you have a short report, even if the writing is good (perhaps especially) you'll leave readers hungering for more, and I think that sort of detracts from the overall experience. Take your favorite movie and imagine that they made it half the length but still had to tell the whole story. It kind of loses a bit, doesn't it? But equivalently, imagine they'd made it twice as long, but had only as much substance as that half length version. The rest was say, shitty love scenes (or whatever is applicable). Still isn't as good as the first one. There's a balance to be achieved, rather than saying "long is better, short is worse." But like the macro example, more length leaves room for more substance, which of course makes a better report.
Am I making sense? I feel like I've rambled aimlessly.

Some valid points...it got tedious after a bit. I'm glad you didn't go into detail as to how Ling and wakiki were flying their fleets around late game. I remember watching that rep and then when all that started alt tabbing out to chat...
But...well, it was *long* and slightly boring. And...the jokes weren't that much funnier now that I'm awake. But I could follow the action decently well (considering it's a FFA) and so you get points for that.
The formatting was ow. Maybe my resolution or something but a lot of pics were sticking out of the grey table. That just looks bad. And while one could argue that a report is more about the writing than how it looks, you do have to appeal aesthetically to your audience if you're gonna go graphical. Hell, in general. The easier on the eyes it is to go through the report, the more enjoyable it is. But whenever I ran into one of those off center quote blocks or a protruding pic, I cringed.

Heh, well, I specifically remember a 3-way battle in which praetor had like 10 barracks sitting in the middle, then bunny's ultras walked in, then my 4-5 control groups of goliaths goliaths, but the way you described it was something like "and then wakiki makes his way to bunny's main" (I think that was the place).
On another note, I have seen BRs that were shorter, and had worse writing than this, that got a 7.X or an 8. : I guess that boils down to the opinion on the writing though. |

Just realized I have yet to read this. And it upsets me that I didn't. Very good game but, much like a lot of badme's pictures your borders don't fit on a few of your pictures and don't go far enough, or go too far over the picture. Also you didn't do collages and opted to do single pictures, which is just unnecessary. If not for these things I'd of given this an eight for good writing, and a great gay ~NoHunters FFA.

Decent report. Your writing was good enough, and your imagery has superb potential. Your next report could easily be a 9+ - in fact, there's only one problem I really see here:
Cover only what's necessary!
Images: Except in massive battle scenes, keep them relatively small and portraying only action. Use smaller pictures with aligning html to portray non-battle scenes, and in collages depict only what is necessary. There were far, far too many shots of random spots of terrain or burning bases - and not enough depictions of action.
Writing: Much of the same. Don't describe things that you know will be borring for the reader. I honestly don't care a whole lot about build orders or the like in FFAs. Just cover what's necessary, again, and focus on the action - make the battles your centerpieces, and cover building sequences very fleetingly.
FFAs are hard to report - if you're not comfortable doing the above, I'd suggest sticking to 1v1s ( although you definitely need to fix your images either way ). 7. |
