actually, someone already made an SS battlereport, waaaay back, before even the accursed were released. Of course, it was fake, but still an SS BR :). However, this <i>is</i> the first real SS BR.
DivvyO, SSFantasy is dang fun :). I once had the top spot in that, and I'm probably still up there, but having gotten the beta via a contest win, I'm not playing it as much. Also, you deserve a beta for playing SSFantasy :).
Phobos_Colz: it does have recorded games. If you notice, YRM mentions "replays" multiply times in the report; that's the recroded game. He got some of the pics for this BR by watching the replay of the game and taking pictures of it. For example, that's how he got pictures of his opponents base.
And YRM, cool report, I especially like the big picture made of 14 screenshots :). What you need to make in your next report is an animated gif of some big battle that's like 3 screenshots by 3 screenshots. That'd be cool.

Talon/WLJ, I think that's because he took the screens while he was in replay mode. When you're in replay mode, I'd assume you can see from a single player's perspective or the entire map, and obviously YRM was looking at the entire map during the replay.

Great BR. Now I *really* want SS beta; and even if I don't get it, I REALLY REALLY REALLY want the game to come out soon!

Ethermoon has hackers wrapped around their middle finger :P. And while it's obvious to any Strifeshadow player that YRM was in replay mode, someone unfamiliar with SS might be slow to realize that. Also LloydCarr, the only Ethermoon person who would hack is Zileas... he uses the Skill Hack. You can access it too, just type in "Zileas Sux". Thanks guys.

Hey, let me just square it away, especially since posting right after Zileas. I didn't include the replay with this game because I played it on Friday, and it'a already a balance patch too old. Later, Strifeshadow will be able to play replays based on a patch #, but it can't yet, which would make THIS replay a major pain in the ass to watch for everyone who is on the current patch.

(The reason I could watch it is because I didn't put the new balance patch over my files at work)

The patches are happening as fast as Zileas can analyze input and make appropriate changes and as fast as Martin can fix bugs. The team is really busting ass to make constant improvement from here until release.

So... I didn't include the replay file, it's ok. I still was able to take all my screenshots AFTER the fact (yeah, yeah, 1.8 will have that too), which was a bonus... plus, you can jump forward to frames, play the game from 1/4 to 8x speed... etc. There are plenty of replays floating around right now, but this report is for the people who wanted a beta and didn't get it yet.

Ed and I aren't the best or most bloodthirsty RTS players, and we didn't go too far out of our way to end the game early, but this is a pretty good sample of two average RTS players duking it out in a new game. (the game went 35 minutes btw)

Thanks to the beta testers who can and have backed me up that we're getting in some fun and competitive games even at this early point in the beta process. Johnny_Vegas would probably say the same thing as Drefsab if he were settled into his new place. (BTW, Dref, that could be a hella good report... you vs Vegas) *stop saying hella!*

Later all, and thanks again for the many kind words.
-YRM-

GammaRayBurst...

What isn't working for you? Did you report the problem to support@ethermoon.com?

Note the following tags that can be added after the properties/target of a desktop shortcut to your Strifeshadow.exe

-nosound (no sound, if your sound card is the issue, this fixes)
-performance (gives you performance numbers during the game to help isolate problems)
-ddraw (helps players with older video cards, old drivers, or certain Voodoo cards to play the game without system lag... it does make effect graphics dithered)

Maybe one of those would help you. If you are having the same problem as SCV with crashes, Martin will likely have the problem fixed soon after IGF if you've reported it accurately to him.

I hope this helps. A lot of people are in there playing without any trouble, but there seem to be a handful of configurations that choke. Let me know if I can help in any other way. (though I'm not nearly as useful as a good bug report to Martin is)

Later,

Nice report Joe - way to abuse a new player.

Someone asked about the side and rear damage. They are substantial. Rear damage, last I checked is a 75% bonus. The catch of course is that you really need to simultaneously attack a unit from two sides to realize the bonus, otherwise you'll at best get one or two hits in at the higher rate.

The side bonus is lesser, 25% I believe. In the very early game, melee wars involve a good amount of positioning to avoid or take advantage of the bonus. Once the game gets going though, it really comes into play when a player splits his forces and attacks from 2 or 3 sides at once.

Note that some units, like the chaos elemental, don't technically have a front or rear. You cannot get a rear attack bonus on such a unit.

#66 [88119]
63.162.53.253
Flisk - Artius nailed it of course. Rear bonus is 75% and side is 25%, but it's something that affects battle outcomes but that in this game, both of us countered.

Sere - Yeah, we both used a risky opening. He scouted me and I saw him putting up a Weatherstone at his southern choke. It was sort of like we each countered a power build with a power build.

Dr.Zchivago - The -performance tag won't fix anything, it just puts up performance numbers so you can see if you're having high spikes and where. If you have a constant high spike in the graphics number, that means it's an older or bad video driver or a card that doesn't support D3D, so you'll need to run in -ddraw mode. See what I mean?

Beta wishers - I hope we can put in a really large wave not too long after IGF and get a lot of you on it. We'll do our best.

As for BroodWar reports, never say never, but even with a patch coming, I've played several thousand games of BW and SC and I had fun, but I've been itching for something new that is similarly fun. Hopefully Strifeshadow will fill that void since BW that other RTS games haven't, good multiplayer. So far, I'm really enjoying the SS games and looking forward to trying out new strategies, but we still have a lot of things to tweak, finish and fix before the game can move beyond beta. (no kicking back and relaxing yet)

Actually, YRM, my problem seems to be more related to Zileas' March 17th patch. I tried installing but it seems like the replay feature doesn't recognize it or soemthing. Keeps telling me I have the wrong accursed.ads, elven.ads, and dark elves.ads files. But in other cases it was able to work. for example, I have been able to watch Gnacox's replays without trouble. But I was unable to watch Dio's replays (maybe his were before the latest patch?).

Probably the most serious problem for me is that 75% of the games I try to join hang because I'm behind a router. I'm working on that one, but I dunno how well it will go.

#81 [88188]
63.162.53.253
Alita99, did you sign up for a beta? If so, everyone who did has at least a decent chance of getting in the second wave. (not everyone can be of course)

GRB - Yeah, it won't play the older replays because the replays actually replay the data of the game, and if stats on a unit change, it changes the result of the replay, which desynchs the game. Future builds will allow for older patch replays to go down, find the right patch level, and play the replay, but it doesn't work yet.

As for the router problem, try to find one or two guys that you can successfully play with and focus on meeting them at set times until those problems can be looked at further.

But, yeah, this stuff is your usual beta headaches... compounded by our lack of playtesting budget for "on site" (we don't have a site) playtesting. It will be addressed though.

Smoked Pork... are you the old-school Smoked Pork? How's it goin after all this time?

Heh, it depends on what you count Dagomar.

If you count just the report on a normal game, you're right, this wasn't WW3, but if you keep in mind that it's a new game that must be explained, a simpler contest, though still good, is better (AOK Report comes to mind). Then, if you count that we (EM) actually "made" the game being reported on... those things might change the consideration from say, this same type of effort put into a 1-1 report on "Lost Temple" with units everyone knows like the back of their hand and a map that people can see in their sleep and the same strategies that have been explained ten thousand times already.

I thought about coming out and doing a FFA report with all 3 races, but it seemed like too much to do that and try to give people who have never played the game a quick understanding and action that isn't "too" tough to follow (like in a FFA).

There will be Strifeshadow reports that push the envelope, but for now, the whole process of making a game, then writing a report on it, seemed to be a push far enough.

BTW... your beta priveleges are hereby revoked... (hehe, just kidding man =P)

ooh i have to disagree with dag :[

i MUCH prefer pics that show a wide scale all at once to mass collages. Anyways, yrm, i just went back and looked at this again and must say that that sylvan treetop sanctuary is absolutely the most amazing pic in a br ive seen. 3-d rendering looks so cool sparsely mixed in there.

I hereby stand humiliated, smashed into the ground from my previous dizzying heights ;D

YRM, I'd have to agree with you, which is cool and altogether rather nice on the whole type of a thing.

But I stick to my collage thingy! Wider pics is great, but in WW3 you managed to combine it with collages and that was sexy as a wombat.

This is still sexy as a Kangaroo though =)

What, my Beta privalages are revoked?! @@@@@@@@@@@@@HHH DIE DIE DICTATORSHIP @%#$@#$@@@# PIECE OF *#*$$ NOOOO YOU CAN'T DO THIS YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO <B> ME </B> NOOOOOO YOU -

A compliment of that magnitude makes me feel uncomfortable... In all seriousness, I'm not even a role model, but I'm glad you liked the report.

I've already lost a few. Since I work 40 hours a week to pay for food and mortgage and also work another 20 to 50 hours a week on Strifeshadow, I've had less time to play than many of our testers.

omg, smoked pork's quote is right above this long comments section. after reading this report again, i have a question, will it be possible to make obs maps in ss? In probability this is an incredibly stupid and dumb question, with which I probably know the the answer. Just another report to add height to the already impossible mountain which you've build with your bare hands
#110 [88315]
63.162.53.253
LOL SCV... I'm just slow at work today and will be leaving tomorrow for IGF, so I check the comments every few hours. Then, I end up seeing questions that are easy to answer...

Overmind. Observers can just OBSERVE in Strifeshadow, you don't need to do anything to the maps, and 4 observers could watch a map with only 2 starting spots that wasn't specially built for observers (in fact, you NEVER have to do that). Also, observers don't use game bandwidth and if you lose in a multiplayer battle, you're moved to an observer slot.

But won't some observers want to cheat? You can turn off their vision and chat if you choose.

You can always see a game without the shroud of war in a replay if you choose.

After so long, the Great One has returned. Now he's going to go away for another 15 months to work out every last detail on Strifeshadow. I haven't even played it yet, cause I didn't get in a beta request. But it looks like a helluva time. When is it scheduled to drop YRM?

It deserves a 10 just for the cool sylvan rendered picture. Also, the collage was awesome for showing how the battlefield looks, too bad there was only one (but it would take forever to make lots of collages I guess). I like the idea of upgrading the production buildings too. This report soothes my non-beta status pains.

Do beta testers have to buy the game when its out or will it just patch beyond the beta stage?

One more remark on those games.

I would've done _anything_ to have had the opportunity to observe game 4 in that series and battlereport it.

I would've done a better job BRing it than those Blizzard people. 8*)

You know, i'm a busy man, but all i can say is that all my expectations of strifeshadow were satisfyed and MORE! The game looks great and a great report. omg, mad gay. i wrote a big ass article here, but it got erased.

HOMONAGE!

anyways, i just wrote a lot about SS in general and how the quality of the brs rock these days. i also wrote about how you are the comment king, and how this will get 200+ comments like SCV posted.. altho only 50%, not 30% will be of YRM's. =]

bleh, i'm too tired to rewrite the whole thing.. it's freaking 3 in the morning, and i was writing this as a last minute thing. just imagine 40 people kissing your ass about battlereporting and your graphic works on SS... that about sums up my post.

=]

thanks.. go do WW5.gogogogog
