Hi all... It's great to be back :) Minor quibble: Move 20 should read "Nb1" not "Rxh4" again... still, the diagram is OK, so... shouldn't be too hard to follow...
"A Battle Report on Chess" I hear you sigh... "What's next - parcheesi? Backgammon? Risk!?" Hmm, good ideas allround, methinks ;) You'd better let me watch some of your high quality Starcraft games, or I might make it my business to include all sorts of strange "battles" hereabout...
Peace,
/Rump

Nice to see you back, I still love these reports man, I love the way you write and everything of that nature, I loved the relations to BW as it helped me a bit :). MORE MORE MORE.

Nicely done. It's been a long time since I played chess with any regularity, and I enjoyed reading your analysis. The game was a good one for folks to read who know enough about chess to understand the significance of the moves, without being so far above the average casual player's head that it's not really useful.

That is, if you're a newbie, you can learn more from some mediocre player than from the Maynards of the world, because their level is so far beyond yours that you can't really understand the significance of their moves. It's outside your comprehension.

Wow I read that whole thing. I'm never playing you in chess. :-)

Mark4 and YRM are pretty good at it though.

Very cool. I used to play chess somewhat competitavely in the glory days of grade 4, but when the people I played with stopped playing, so did I. *sigh*

<i>"...and in effect this is what wins the game for White. Well, that and my incandescent genius."</i>

btw, that line was hilarious.

This was an awesome chess report. Wonderful job drawing Starcraft parallels. I would give this a 10. The only reason I don't is that you didn't label the board with letters and numbers, thus making me work to understand what pieces you were talking about. But for that little tidbit, this report was perfect.

Cheers,
Dref

Reading this report showed me how long it's been since i played chess.

"what??! what's rumple doing.....oh, yeah, i see now.....i'm dumb =["

:)

Great report.

I think white made some very swift counters and provoked much displacement, but IMO this was black's game up until he got impatient with the Queen.

Did you read your opponent well rumple, or did you simply out-smart him?

OMG - thanks everyone for your input and comments. Drefsab -- boy, is my face red! If only you knew how close I came to adding that - in a little pop-up window, no less.

"Hmm, only the little algebraic pop-up left... nah, I'm gonna just send it in, I'm curious to see how they'll rate it." D'oh! :)

(Gosh what an ungrateful schmuck I am... Whining about being given a 9 for a chess-report for chrissake... people like me make me sick... heh...)

Seriously though, if you want to fool around (sic) over the board, check out the ICC (Internet Chess Club). Download free interfaces, chat/play with thousands of people from absolute beginners to world-known Grandmasters. It's great; particularly that wildly addictive Blitz-out called Bullet; each player has One Minute for the entire game... that'll get your adrenaline going... Once you're there, look me up :) I'm reg'd under the handle AbsolutelyVile :)

Thanks again for your comments! It's great to be back :-D

Me as old chess player really enjoyed this. I've thinked the same thing, like how much SC and Chess r pretty same. Really fresh. Good job.

Kickass! I was thinking of doing that myself, except no one will play me in chess anymore :(
I probably shouldn't be criticising your gameplay, so i'll complain about the report:
That board is so overplayed! Why not try a little change? True, you played with the correct amount of resources (only 1 queen, instead of a board full of them) but talk about lack of variety!
Sorry, it was too good to pass up.
-Elendale (now i'm going to have to do a report on Warhammer 40k... as soon as i find time to play a game...)

You threaten to report all sorts of "battles" but you'll NEVER make one wierder than one by Mark4, in which he BR'd a marathon he ran in. THAT was funny, and (IIRC) had an embarassing picture of Sp|ne at the end.

Awesome, makes we wanna play chess again. I usta play very competivly. Traveling, going to tournaments and getting the chit kicked out of me cuz i sucked :)
Then something clicked. I saw moves about seven moves away. And analyized the future of my moves more percisely.
In one tournament, i beat a GM (after seeing me play he wanted a game) with a clever bishop sacrafice that looked as clever as Bobby Fischers famous bishop sacrafice :)
Since, then i given up chess. The friends i practiced with stopped playing.. :(

Kek! i love shess reports...i remember a log time ago another person did a few famous chess games for BRs...

great report, and, like Dref said, easy to follow except letters and #s woulda been nice. Gawd its been a while since i played a good chess game. I remember i used to think material was everything :P

anywho, great report and gj on the game :D

Not to go aginst the grain here but..... Are you guys on CRACK??? This was a good report but just because you made refrences to starcraft does not mean you should put it in the starcraft section. I would, just on this account, give this a 4. Last i looked, this was at a 9. Of coures if this was in the "other" secton it would rightly deserve a 9 but not here. SHAME on you raters SHAME!

The picturework was nice, but the game was too one-sided.
You better pick a more exciting game next time. ;)

Well, j/k.
Great report, I don't play chess very often although I am better than most of my friends. It really was well-commented and in some way entertaining. Keep going and start a chess BR series!!

Wow dude. This was the first report in a very very long time that I have thorougly enjoyed reading all the way through. Most reports I lose interest (no matter how good they are), somewhere along the line. But this was the first report in a long time where I have wanted to read the entire thing. Maybe it's because I like chess (ok that's why :P), but I really enjoyed the game and your analysis.

Let's see more!!

I'm absolutely thrilled you liked it. Been thinking about it for a long time... was positive I couldn't be the only chess/craft hybrid out there. Thanks a million for all your comments...

ShadowSkull -- this BR *is* in the Other category. Guess we know who smoked that crack now, huh?

CitizenKane -- You got it :) I steered clear of that one on purpose, since I was afraid it would contain too many sub-variations and I didn't know how to handle them. Figured it would be hard to follow with diagrams of potential positions etc :) Looking forward to seeing your BR, it's a great game.

A fair share of you even seem to like it enough to provoke me into giving you more of the same :) Food for thought, food for thought... Although I *was* in the middle of the unbelievably silly Risk! BR with tons of pics w superimposed Starcraft figures on the continents... oh well, what's life like without a pipe dream?

Uh-oh. Boss is eyeing me. Gotta get back to work. Well, what passes for it anyway. Rent-paying ploy. See ya.

For toss it would be probes as pawns, zealots as bishops, goons as knights, reavers as rooks, an archon as queen (perhaps carrier) and an arbiter as a king (if your king dies, you whole army could be detected and would die :P )

Cool, classic Sicilian. I usually go Sicilian dragon, bringing out my second pawn and then my knight to threaten the king's pawn.

Yeah, a chess battlereport at last! And it was good too!

I have one question though, why did Black castle when his position was exposed to the point of insanity?
