Wow, now this is a cool br! Man vs. nature (or perhaps his own un-fitness ;). Considering that I'm acrophobic, however, I think I'll leave the mountains to the hikers and keep to the stairs...
Anyone ever been to Monmarte (sp?) in Paris? I think the steps up to Le Sacre-Coeur are probably a mile long...long enough, anyways, that there's a funicular for the weak of heart (leg?). "Who the hell needs StairMaster? I'm on vacation!!" But the view of nighttime Paris cannot be beat, except by, perhaps, riding in the hot-air balloon in one of the parks. |

Good work JV. Note to all the college/highschool age people reading these comments. It SEEMS like an easy thing to say, while you're working out in school and college, running 5 miles a day, benching 285 lbs, curling 150 in sets, etc... etc... that "You'll never let yourself get out of shape." Hell, the gym is right there at the college, you have tons of free time compared to real life, and you've got many friends to train with!
Then you get a job that you don't get home from until after 6:00, and you have a house to take care of, and you have a wife and possibly kids, and you don't want to totally quit playing vidio games and become an adult, and you're taking on freelance shit, and all the friends that used to work out with you move away, and the grass is a foot tall, etc... etc...
The half hour drive and back to the gym for a 45 minute workout is one of the hardest things to maintain.
If you find a home or job that's near a gym, or actually has a gym at the office... consider that one of the GREATEST perks of all time. If you have a friend nearby that is/was in the Army or Marines or something, consider them the best friend you can have, cuz they'll push your lazy ass! Great job JV.
Since taking on Strifeshadow and a full time job and all of the above, I've been sorely lacking in training, but this report inspired me to get my ass back out there and start... (that and I feel shitty from not working out regularly).

Nooooooo, YRM, say it aint so!! I'll never get out of shape! Well, I guess you are right, even football players like me will probly end up like lazy slobs with long day jobs. Oh well. Good story, certainly a good read, though I don't know how healthy it is to be hiking near LA, the smog capital of the world. Next time, someone should run across America or climb Mount Everest. Lets dare probe to do that, then we'll get rid of him forever! Anyway, this does deserve a 9 or 10, simply because of the time and effort put into it. Good job.

I read this after climbing two 14'ers here in Colorado, Gray's peak and Torrey's peak. They were like 1/4 a mile away from each other, so it was kinda like cheating. I was surprised the sun was a problem, I dressed in four layers and still got a cold. Maybe it's because I started at 5:00 am. Maybe it's also because I did it on 2 hours of sleep.
Today, the day after, EVERYTHING hurts.
I have the same "programmer's physique," even after losing 20 pounds (185 now). It got real tough at the top, trying to breath at 14,267 feet. Gives you a headache. We also took the hardest way, a level 3 incline on the hands and knees climbing up jagged rocks.
Other than that, this was almost exactly like my climb (first time I read it). I have a copy of Into Thin Air, I gotta read that. Anyways, if you ever read this, did you climb another mountain?

I climbed two more here in Colorado, but only managed to get up one of them.
The first was Sherman's Peak -- or the one next to it. One is a smidgen under 14,000 ft.
That was fun because me, my brother, and my brother's friend got completely lost on the way down.
The second was Long's peak, a.k.a the most popular one in Colorado (and the only fourteener north of Boulder).
It was about a six mile hike to get up there, and I reached the "key hole" that's so very close to the summit. That's when I saw the clouds.
I finished that one by running for my life from a thunderstorm for about a mile or so to the treeline, where I was convinced the chances of me dying were much slimmer.
I haven't gone since. Imagine why. |
