In my opinion anybody playing BGH or any other "Mucho Money" map is playing something that a game that should be in Use Map Settings, it's not the real game. If people played BGH in UMS I'd be fine, but it really changes the game. I consider BGH Commando Wars, or Bunker Command. And anybody who reported one of those wouldn't get higher then a 4, and that only if it is really funny.

What the hell are you people talking about? The belief that it is acceptable to fuck up someone elses game because , in your book, he/she is not playing the game as it was designed to, or in your mind it is not a real game he's playing is completely lame. If the game wasnt designed to be played in money maps why is there an option for high minerals? And why did Blizzard ever release BGH. I dislike playing on money maps or playing uninteresting stomps as much as the next nh regular but some people need to relax and have some fun instead. If you dont like it, dont play nobody is forcing you. But that is no excuse to backstab.

Oh,and dont get me started with the "bgh is the biggest mistake blizz ever did" or i'll have to use my alabaster staff of flames i just found at Act2.

Dialtone,

I don't know what you're smoking but gimme some.

Think about this. You're defending people playing BGH, which is fine. But BGH players aren't at the core of this "controversy," which you have overlooked. It's comp stompers. People who will, in gross numbers exceeding six people, gang up on one computer for what? A lousy 1 added to their record? If that isn't bad enough, they don't even make an attempt to play. They rush with workers. WORKERS! I don't care who finds what fun. That is not fun. That is pathetic. And killing those guys is funny as hell.

TT and others:

That line of thinking is incredibly lame. If they enjoy the game killing comps and gaining a good record, how does this possibly hurt you? What conceivable right do you have to ruin their fun just because -- in your opinion -- they're getting a cheap win? I might as well start clubbing people over the head who play Hearts because I think they should be playing Bridge instead.

People have the right to enjoy the game in whatever fashion they please as long as it doesn't interfere with the rights of others. You backstab and ruin someone else's game, and that makes you lower than anyone who plays 7on1 rush-with-worker games all day. If someone has a 10-minute no-rush game, then you either play and obey the contract, or find another game. Going in and rushing them to ruin their game is more immature than a bunch of bullies kicking kids off of the basketball court because they can't dunk.

What if I decide that shooting people is fun, and go around murdering people because I think they don't dress correctly? That kind of attitude is incredibly high school-ish, and is the reason our American society is so bent on looking hip and cool in front of each other. You ridicule what you don't agree with, and ruin other people's fun. Let them enjoy the game in peace -- if they want to play 7on1 games, or play Starcraft 12 hours a day without a social life, or post on forums all day, or play Hearts instead of Bridge, or wear funny-looking thick glasses, or turn on cheat codes in single player Starcraft, then leave them alone and don't be a bully. So what if you don't think it's legitimate fun? So what if they just have artificial records and never play a non-comp game?

#43 Phobos_ColZ[56344]
spider-wg071.proxy.aol.com
Well shock, they have a right to play whatever gay Starcraft variations they want, but we have a right to kill them. After all, isn't the point of having multiplayer to have people play each other? Using your reasoning, you could say that hackers are justified because if they want to hack and get a really good ladder record, then thats their right. If they have a right to make artificial records by peon rushing a computer, than I think people should have the right to make artificial records by killing comp stompers. If we are ruining their fun, wow, they are ruining the fun of countless real players who are getting disconnected because of server traffic caused by people abusing Starcraft. If they want to play the comp, there is a Custom Scenario button. USE IT.Well shock, they have a right to play whatever gay Starcraft variations they want, but we have a right to kill them. Phobos - you miss the point. You have a right to have fun as long at it doesn't INTERFERE with another person's right. Doesn't that make sense from a purely humanitarian standpoint? If our world didn't work this way, then I shudder to think what we'd turn into.

They're playing on multiplayer, but that doesn't give you the right to ruin their game and break the contract they set up. If they're playing 7on1 comp games, then -- if you join their game -- you're committing to playing by their contract. I can't fathom how this doesn't make sense to you guys. As a practical example, there are lots of public Starcraft forums out there. It is universally considered as rude and childish if you enter one of those and start spamming about how you like to eat green beans. Yes it's a public forum and anyone can post, just like SC is a public multiplayer game and anyone can join any game. But there is a simple level of human decency that says that you respect the rights of other people.

To pull another example probably from many of our lives -- you probably play a fair amount of Starcraft since you read battlereports and actually post on them. I'm sure some of your friends probably ridicule you and tell you that you need to get a life. Don't you respond that you have a right to enjoy life and spend time in whatever manner you wish as long as it doesn't interfere with them? What right, after all, do they have to criticize your lifestyle and tell you that you shouldn't be playing this game? What if they just started hounding you on b.net and joining all your games and disconnecting on you and banning you from channels? Surely you'd see something wrong with this, and would defend your right to be left alone since nothing you're doing is directly affecting them?

Similarly, you have no right to go into 7on1 comp games and backstab, or to go into no rush games and rush them, or to go into a 2on2 game and backstab your ally, or to use a map hack to get to ladder. To do so is just being incredibly selfish and pursuing your own enjoyment at the expense of others. As I eluded to earlier, it's just as bad as if I came to your place and shot you full of holes because I felt your life was lame.

We're supposed to be a society of tolerance -- at least in the US. For matters of questionable morality (such as a mother killing her child even though it *is* after all her child), the government or popular opinion has a right to interfere. But otherwise, for a simple game like Starcraft where people are trying to enjoy themselves in peace, those who ruin other people's fun for the pure selfish reason that they find it fun are truly the lowest in society.

"Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial." One of the lessons about growing up and maximizing your chances of being accepted in society is in realizing that even though you technically have a right to do a LOT of different things, such as watch a drowning person die without helping him or yelling slandering phrases at your classmates because you think they look funny, there are some things you shouldn't do even though you have the ability to do so.

BTW: I think all you folks playing worthless pub games are causing server splits and ruining the game for us serious ladder level competitors. I'm going to join all your 2on2 games and backstab my partner so I can get you people from spamming our precious servers. In fact, heck, I hate playing with lousy partners even in competitive games, so I'm just going to backstab my partner whenever he's not performing up to par and end the game early, so I cut down on the wasteful use of our servers.
[/sarcasm]
You get the point... BTW - I've almost never been disconnected from "server traffic". I have less than a dozen disconnects through my entire years of playing Starcraft, and most of those were due to double disconnects on ladder games. I really doubt there are enough 7on1 comp stomp players online that it's caused any of your disconnects.

Well Shock, you made some very good points and I am inclined to agree with you. While I am not a "serious ladder-level competitor", there is one point I was trying to make and I don't think I made it clear. This is something that drives Blizzard crazy, because they intended for records to show the true skill level of an opponent. Why do you think it pops up every time you enter a room? However records are starting to mean less and less.

A major cause of this is comp stomping. The reason Blizzard even left the option in B.net was for clans and such to practice tactics against the computer. However, it has become twisted into comp-stomping to the point where its hard to find a medium-level player because almost everyone has either obscenely high records or no record at all. Just because they CAN do something doesn’t mean they should. The U.S. government won’t let you kill yourself, or use illicit drugs, or be drunk in public, etc. You CAN do those things but that doesn’t mean you should. Some people even consider using drugs to be “fun” even though we think of it as twisted. Who are we to stop them? The purpose of B.net was to let people play games against each other. Peon rushing might be fun to them, but it nullifies the system of skill measurement that is a record. I have several experiences where I have been peon rushed in games by people with 40-0 records. It really makes it hard to see whom you are playing.

In any case, falsifying your record by comp-stomping is just as bad as falsifying it by map hacking your way to the top. Frankly, I don’t really care about records, but there is now absolutely no way to know the skill level of your opponent. While no one should put a gun to these people’s heads and tell them not to do this, I think there should at least be a separate record for games played against the computer, or something of the sort. Comp-stomping is an abuse of Starcraft, just as using a laser pointer on the President’s forehead is an abuse of the laser-pointer. And as an abuse, there should at least be some way in which records can be kept relatively accurate. Just as Zerg Soccer or other UMS games don’t go on your record, neither should comp-stomps. I don’t have a problem with the people themselves, just the practice which has taken away any instrument of skill measurement other than name recognition. Thanks for letting me vent.

As ever,
Phobos_ColZ
