Great repot Casper! Although the pics were really... well they weren't normal looking, the writing on this was spectacular. I am surprised that POA want for a fast tech to carriers. Why didn't he just hold with goons, get his natural and then get carriers? Well I guess I didn't watch the game so how could I know!?

POA is extremely unfamiliar with goon/reaver and goon/templar, especially vs Terran. His favoured approach is a VERY quick expansion to another main, and it had been established in a previous match that Activus! owned this particular tactic with excellent vulture micro.
As for the pics, I just messed with 'em for artistic effect. Dynamic resizing within the browser. |

hey Casper great report, i knew it would be good =]
you should come back to BW, i'm tiring of D2 and am gonna start playing BW again, and i want to get owned pvz :D
Activus is a really really good Terran, probably the best i've seen. this was my first time doing this unorthodox strategy, and i think i could have won, had i expanded/contained more with the ground troops i had rather than sending them after his expansions. it was definitely winnable, but i was playign as if he didn't have 3 so i went for the kill not knowing about his other bases. i still stand by my early expand strategy, it continues to win =] i want to play activus pvt some more tho, should be fun.
cas btw, its not that i'm unfamiliar with goon/reaver or goon/templar, but i dunno i don't find it a powerful strategy vs metal, i think reavers are too risky to go to as a default strat, as most terrans can prepare well for that event. |

By the numbers I find that a goon rush/2 expansions/dt is probably the most secure opening vs terran. He sees goons, goes tanks which are wiped when he tankpushes by the dt's. However, it's only really good 2-3 times vs a player as they will tend to adapt to incorporate a fast vessel, then you need to diversify your strategy once again.
I dunno, I just don't like fast 2nd nexus. I feel that protoss should either goon rush with superfast range or reaver rush then fork to something involving templar or massive leg zealots following at least 2 expansions. It's just that without some form of control over the terran you are basically allowing them free movement over the map, which I feel is an error given the power of vulture/tank. I've lost a million goons to vulture tank, and it hurts.
As a change of pace, I've experimented with a dbl nexus, 1 cannon, then scout rush. Basically you beat back his initial push, then take everything you can while going all zealots once he adapts. This means having the tech infrastructure in place, namely building a nexus, citadel, nexus, forge, nexus, archives and upgrading your boys. The goal is to kill peons/make him turret his base(s), and that gives you the opening you need to make that aggressive powerup. Of course if he builds a fairly early acad and scans you ... |

Ok, one question (To make my ingnorance clear). Why is that gateway/tech building positioning wrong?
The way casper explains things in this and the high level of play made this a fantastic report. The writing could've gone totally on its own, the pics just kicked things up a notch. 9.5 and I'd want to say 10 if the pics weren't "panoramic" style. |

Slings:
You want to design a base with troop flow and defense in mind. Hopefully nothing ever enters your base but if it does, you want to make it difficult for the enemy to maneuver around. So, at 9 on temple, you should build you first pylon either touching the top-right corner of you nexus or 1 square off and build gates either in circular patterns around it (top, right, bottom with a 2nd pylon touching your first) or in an extended line along your assim (i.e. stretching in the opposite direction relative to the way your minerals line up). The reason you put tech under your nexus is to make landing more difficult in the even of a drop, and so that if he does drop, he drops right on top of your 1 cannon 2 goons there. This is written with vultures specifically in mind. The reason I dislike stretching gates in lines is because it tends to hinder troop flow as they exit buildings, and makes it harder to react in a timely fashion to mutas, drops, etc. |

Casper... how can you think that reaver/goon or templar/goon can hold its own in mid-game? Or do you just mean as an opening? As I learned from Bold, goons simply cannot stand up to tank/vulture even with full observer support. And reavers are very risky, a couple of missle turrets can badly discourage any drop and leave you open to a 3fac push. IMO only zealots and/or carriers, always with templar and light goon support, can hold a terran late game. But I agree vulture micro owns early expand :)
Good report as always, nice to see good NH peeps holding against advanced players. |

I like reaver rushing because it forces the Terran to respond to the threat, and renders his vultures damn near useless as raiders due to obs being so near. Also, after forcing him to turret and leave at least 1 tank, his starport will be VERY slow, since he will almost certainly expand once he addresses the threat. And if he's only left 1 tank, he WILL be losing a dozen workers. End of story. Having Robo allows for flexibility on defense and offense; I can expand to an island really early, and take my natural without fear. Then pump out mixed ground and progress to templar/leg zealots while continuing to terrorize with speed upgraded shuttles and expanding once more when I see that he takes his natural. Note that I only do this strat if I can chase off the scouting peon with a probe in which case I would almost certainly cancel the 2nd gate and go reavers.
As for goon/temp -- goon/reaver; I agree with the analysis vs Tank/vult. Hell, tank/vult owns protoss ground PERIOD. Both techniques are purely metagame plays for when you must adopt a reactive posture in order to acquire the resource advantage midgame i.e. "Terran is taking his mineral only, I can't touch him, gotta expand twice but not get my army completely waxed doing it". It's the play to make sure that you at least come out even in any exchanges which MAY be initiated by Terran while powering to massive leg zealots, which are the preferred finisher vs Terran. Remember, Templar are your artillery. Zealots are your strike troops. And goons are your open ground flanking mobile dominators. Spread the puppies into 3 groups of 8 and close on the tanks ideally on 3 fronts preferably after landing storms/scarabs in transit.
The middle of temple is just built for flanking actions. And once you start closing, feed the tanks with goons like you would reavers with marines.
Basically remember that the farther out he comes, the more vulnerable he becomes to flanking actions and the ensuing chaotic overcorrections which tanks tend to perform when flanked.
Just remember, there are alot of things Protoss can do to Terran early on. Hide the citadel and archives in a corner of the map and dt jump after 2 goons, which is basically a 4 unit triple expand. Build the archives in plain sight and go reavers out of some corner of the map. Goon rush without upgrades, double expand and scatter your tech among your bases to confuse him while flanking with dt and leg-zealots as he advances. Double nexus with 2 cannons and hope he doesn't just fly by with vultures. You get the idea.
And when in doubt just straight up goon rush, incorporate reavers or templar, attempt to hold your bases, and make him earn his win the hard way. |

cas i almost beat your goon/reaver with straight tanks, but you adapted to speedy zeal/temps at just the right time and i got lazy on my pushes. so casper knows about just how long goon/reaver is effective, and he switches at the right time. with the strat i use, i expand get 4-5 gates going and THEN the terran takes his natural and then speed zeal/goon just continually harass that expand's cc/workers while i expand more and more . . .
this was the first time i did this 1 gate to carrier thing, it is a viable strat, but my inexperience with it showed, because now i know what i would have done. after destroying the tech/cc in his main i would'nt have gone so hard after all his other bases. i would have kept my carriers/goon/zlots in the middle and then taken like 3 more bases right then instead of just my natural, and then gotten templar tech and fought it out from there. from the scores i lost the game cuz of resources. |

The key to pvt is early game pressure. Whether you go robo or templar tech is rather irrelevant, both ways have their advantages and disadvantages. The most important thing is to hit him fast with a mix of goons/zeals and force him to tank push out of his main. Even though you can't face him head to head, you can slow him down and expand. Fast carriers seemed to work, but I find it rather risky, no offense ;)
I'd go for early game pressure/containment, 2-3 expansions, then mass out of 8 gates with the obvious speedy zeals, (heavily upgraded)
Of course either way, the more skilled player is going to win, so there :)
btw, sv's beat down templay tech, as you all know, so I wonder why more terrans don't get them much faster... oh well. BTW, reaver rush is highly vulnerable to a little prudent defense. IE 1/3 turrets, 1 tank, and depot wallin around mins. It's almost impossible to get around that with a reaver drop. Even one accompanied by probes/zealots. And the shitty thing with reavers is it's very hard to attack the natural because scarabs can't traverse high ground, whereas storm can. I prefer mass ground containment, move to templar after he begins to push out, so you can get madzeals and storm, and then a little later go to robo tech for shuttles and obs, and do a few psi raids behind his push on his mins. You just have to be careful not to get sucked into fighting it out with a push, or your army may be beat down and your main will follow soon.
Anyways, I pretty much suck at pvt, but after learning from my myriad mistakes ;), those things I can say with confidence. The only thing I really hate is unexpected bcs, or ghosts. Ghosts can ruin my day in a hurry :(

Well I hope that helps you (and me ;) all out.
