Elephants are a lot like Infested Terrans (seriously!). They're pretty much guaranteed to do a bunch of damage, but a lot of the times, half that damage will be to your own stuff.
This report is excellent, truly good. Of course, I could spend all day picking apart incorrect historical elements, but then I'm a history major, I can't make everyone live up to the same standards =). |

Where shall we start? First with a few details about the report, not accuracy. You have a nice graphic of Carthaginian territories at the beginning, but you don't show the occupied portions of Italy (belonging to the Romans), which are very important for raising troops.
You give Rome the name of Imperia_Roma, when Rome is still deep in the Republic.
Hannibal won far more than three engagements in Italy, he won or drew scores of battles, there were only three massacres, however.
Your tactics at Cannae make a basic mistake: the Carthaginian center (largely gauls, iberians, and auxilliaries) started out with a bulge towards the Romans, then pulling back, making the Romans extra eager, as well as compounding the already tight ranks they had been ordered to assume. An analogy of goons tripping on each other would be appropriate.
You skip many, many years after Cannae before the attack on Africa (as well as the Spanish campaign, and almost all of the First Carthaginian war).
Scipio did not use the same tactics as Hannibal at Zama. While it is widely accepted that the Romans learned the advanced techniques of maneuver, and the art of strategem from Hannibal, this implies at least some orgininality, the fight at Zama was actually fairly unique, due to the multiple lines of battle employed by both sides and the absence of cavalry until the telling blow at the end (up to which point the battle had been a bitter draw).
Rome didn't purposefully burn Carthage. Rather, the fires spread through the city due to the intense and vengeful street-fighting undertaken when the Romans stormed the city. As is common in wealthy places where every citizen formed the army, almost every Carthaginian owned weaponry, and the essence of the Third Carthaginian war was the first major urban conflict. Think Grozny nowadays, but as a city of over a quarter of a million people, and not bombed before hand. The Romans lost a lot of troops...
The Romans did not sow salt into the ground. For one, this would tend to beg the question of why the Romans found a colony there later, in the imperial era (curiously named Carthage). Two, salt was expensive in Northern Africa.
Not really to the credit of the human race, but this is not the first mass slaughter, or even the last before Hitler's Germany. Heck, the Romans do the same thing just a bit later in Epirus (modern Albania), and the Athenians did it before them...

Ok... In defense:
I gave the names Imperia and Phoeni to have clan-like prefixes and I wanted them to be dead easy to understand. My goal wasn't to imply that Rome was imperial just like Carthage was no longer Phoenician. then but if I did then that was a mistake.
I will conced the point of the battle of Zama because I only have one source corroborating it. However every single source material I have ever read mentions ROME utterly destroying Carthage in anger and laying salt on the ground. Is this just a legend that has been carried over in history books? Was this recently repudiated by Historians?
I didn't say it was the first or last until WWII, just the worst. But this statement also only has one source.

The utter destruction is true, fewer stones were on top of each other than in Stalingrad after the Germans and Russians got through there. The salt part is a myth.

| I loved your report, as well as the SC analogy. Hannibal & Archimedes are my heroes. They're like me- Hannibal, a fighting loser, and Arch, a nerdy guy who built big weapons for fun and cared more about engineering than his life (I'm not actually an engineer, but I plan to be one). But again, keep in the SC analogy. I have criticized SC before, but the unit personalities let you get attached to them more than any other game. Please write more like his. |
