This might have been one of your best written reports yet I think. You captured the essence of what zerg is all about, now if only for just one shining moment I could play like that!
Was there anything Mage could have done differently? Or was is just flawlessly executed by arkon, and nothing Mage could have done would have mattered? Seems to me that the endless waves of troops like that means that the defender is going to slip up eventually at some point. Those mutas from the rear were EVIL! |

| I think Mage slipped up a few times. First, I think he gave up on the frontal assault. If he kept up a steady flow of zealots he could have made Arkons do zerglings instead of drones for another few minutes. Second, he had all that time to kill the natural hatchery while they were fighting zealot vs ling. He also didn't get goon range for a while, and he missed with a few of his storms at the beginning hydra battles, which hurt a little. I'm pretty sure he let his economy slip a few times too. Hard stuff to really put in a report if the reader doesn't instinctively get it anyways. |

Now there's a man who makes me proud to play Zerg. That's exactly how the Swarm is supposed to work--endless, relentless, pounding assaults that give the enemy no time to think or plan. Like SnowSquall said... if only I could for one moment play like that.
Actually, this brings up an interesting aspect of Starcraft: the psychological one. I might be wrong, but I'll bet Mage was feeling pretty harried for most of that game. He probably made mistakes that he wouldn't have made if Arkons had given him a chance to breathe. Psyching your opponents out is a powerful weapon. If they think you're better than they are, it makes them start to think defensively rather than offensively, which shifts control of the game to you; and every time you attack, it distracts them and throws their concentration off. This goes double if the attack is from an unexpected direction or with an unexpected type of unit. I can't count the number of times I've gotten thrown for a loop by an attack I didn't expect and wasn't ready for, and then lost the game because I couldn't get back in the "groove."
The thing I found most impressive was Arkons's willingness to sacrifice his troops. He was perfectly ready to throw his warriors away just to keep the pressure on. Some of those attacks weren't even cost-effective; they just kept Mage in a defensive stance. It takes a lot of confidence in your skill to do that.
And I won't even start on the micro both players displayed in each battle... my God.
Excellent BR. The quality of the players was matched only by the quality of the writing. |

Kick ass battle report! I love the way you used Arkons style of play to show everyone how to play zerg. It's the thing to use all the units available. And the appropriate ways to attack, and what buildings to take out quickly. Nice hit and run strategies with sending in Hydras in the front door, then come in the back door in his main to kill the templar archives before Mage realized what was going on. And when he responded to that threat, Arkons came back to the front with more hydras. Just classic Pressure-Cooker play!
Just goes to show, if you can keep that pressure on, take out a few vital buildings and not afraid to lose units while expanding and keeping your opponent from expanding. Your chances of winning greatly increase, as was told in this supburb battle report. |

| Well if I hadn't just had the Toss/Zerg imbalance proven to me by 2 1400+ zergies (who could have killed me with any other race anyway, but...), I could have figured it out from this report. Well, we toss still have terran to beat down on :P . I think 1.08 should concentrate a little on these race specific imbalances, and on makeing games like toss v toss less of a massing of infantry and a little more of micro (more like 1.03). Oh, and make sunkens a little weaker. Those bitches are way too tough. |

i played arkons twice in 2on2s yesterday, losing one, winning the other one in a hilarious style:
his partner was dead, he had a very big doom fleet of carriers, and kept killing all my stuff and tech, but i xpanded to every possible place and kept replacing hatches - i lost 38 buildings in this game as zerg - i think i lost around 25 hatches =], my partner finally brought him down with goliaths
what should zerg do vs mass carriers on temple? I killed like 5 carriers with lotsa scourge but then i entered a stage where i never came to lair level again cuz he kept flying from base to base, killing my stuff... i only replaced hatches and built a new pool now and then :)
now that was some funny game =] |

| from this report , I am certain both players are really experts. Especially Archon, he is no doubt a top 16 ladder players, in my entire starcraft gaming experience, i never see a guy as good as he is. But i doubt that he can beat my terran troops with zerg in LT. (it seems like nowaday, it is so hard to lose the game when play terran vs zerg, just like protss vs terran. There are big imbalances. i am glad this game is zerg vs toss (that's most balance muti- race match u can get) |

Don't read so much into what people say, these guys were just talking trash as part of thier way to make it exciting. I actually like it when you can feel the tension between the players...the game gets more intense and the report follows. |

Very well done report - it gives me a passion to play as Zerg. I just kept dreaming of myself as being good like arkonz as i read the report. More power to u Mark4 and pls never grow tired of posting such reports.
Both of them are good (all things are relative, i'm just too bad a player).
Damn i miss playing SC/BW in b.net. I don't have time to play these days. Damn half-life and its mods, its taking up too much of my time for me to play SC/BW.
But SC/BW is a classic game, i'll keep on playng this game for years. But i don't think i can be of the same level in terms of skills like u guys. But i'll keep on playing the game just as it interests me for the varied techniques and strats that could dramatically change the outcome of the game.
I just like to know how would a 100 storm damage changed the game (as a reply to #17 message). I'm a storm lamer in message boards :P |

| This game is a perfect example of the Zerg vs. Toss inbalance that exists. Notice how the toss was always on the defensive and forced to continue to adapt to the differing Zerg tactics. The Zerg can switch tech trees so easily while with toss it is painfully slow and so expensive to do so. Its always so easy for the zerg to continuously attack while expanding and taking over the whole map. Even if the storms had been more accurate, it wouldn't have mattered, this game was over as soon as the toss had retreated and Zerg had his 2nd expansion going at his natural. Also, think about if a couple of those hydras became lurkers, that would have ended it all the more quickly, while forcing the toss to another tech. Hopefully 1.08 will address some of these issues, but its doubtful. If you don't believe me about this inbalance, then go ask Xds Grrr what he thinks about it or any of the other top players around. |

Well... Considering cannons ARE detectors... Why do you need ANOTHER tech tree? Plus.. He didnt use Reaver for the lings/hydras and the psi for the guards.. With the reaver tech you get obs EZ as well. Also toss can take islands MUCH easier WITH reaver tech for more exp's. And Sair/DT should keep zerg from Exping again with ease (D-web hydras, Maul OL's, Run in DT's).

Great BR Mark4. Awesome pacing. Like the others, I felt the tension and the relentless attacks. And I agree with you. They should be the biggest dickheads in the world, it just makes it more fun. At the end Mage should have pointed out Arkons simian ancestry and incestual tendencies and then disconnected. That would be kool.
Also, ZvsT is a great matchup. I played a ladder game as zerg against a toss player by going only hydras. I never used any other tech and only a few lings at the first. I just kept dropping my hydras around his defenses. And there are plenty of toss counters. It's like mark4 said, mage made a few small mistakes at the first with his frontal assault. Arkons definately made himself vulnerable with 3 early hatchs. It's all about making smaller mistakes than your opponent does. If these 2 played 10 games with the same races it would probably end up being 5-5 or 6-4. |

| Also here's a tip for earlier question about low tech zerg against carriers: 12-24 3/3 hydras burrowed together, and when the carriers are on top of you then pop up and attack 1 at a time. |
