Okay, all fixed. :-)
#2 SnowSquall (a11a211.neo.rr.com)[15635]
Ick. No. I don't like this report. It makes Heartcutter look like a mere mortal. Blasphemy!

Just kidding. :) Nice job, I really enjoyed the read and it was easy on the eyes as well.

SnowSquall, who just got his head handed to him on a platter again by Fizban...

#3 Necrosausage! (N165P002.dipool.highway.telekom.at)[15643]
Omnipresent owz ya all...

After reading that he beats Heartcutter I feel less embarassed about him owning me yesterday :(

#4 ChristTheKing (r149155-4166.dobiecenter.com)[15645]
Dang It! I want Heartcutter to win. He ownz. Nobody likes repetitive Toss victories over our noble Terrans. I hope Heartcutter can pull off the next two victories.

Just a question. How did the mine kill the ht if mines don't hit hovering units like hts?

Just a question. How did the mine kill the ht if mines don't hit hovering units like hts?

Don't know, but it did.
#8 Drefsab (rc66.Rmax1.globalsite.net)[15649]
One more small addendum. Omnipresent_one only had 3 expansions. His natural, his mineral only, and the island at the top left. The expansion that Heartcutter went to attack at the end of the game was only Omnipresent_one's third, not fourth.

#9 Silent Strike (119.freehold-08-09rs.nj.dial-access.att.net)[15650]
Mines hit high temps because high temps aren't considered hovering units.
#10 Blank (199.hartford-06-07rs.ct.dial-access.att.net)[15652]
Okay, there seems to be this general idea that mining your base in areas you THINK reavers might drop, is a GOOD idea.

Well, it's not... first off, most early reaver drops come with 2 zealots and 1 reaver (IE, zealots land first, exploding and proximal mines).

Second, if for some magical reason the zealots don't set off the mines, it's fairly easy (on a low latency game) to unload and quickly reload your reaver so the mine blows up without hitting anything.

You can actually get Reavers to dodge mines in this fashion, as well as Vulture concussion gernades, and I THINK siege tank fire, I'm pretty sure I dodged it anyways;-]

Anyways, I'm positive you can dodge mines in this fashion, ask Omnipresent =] heh

Nice br, toss owns!
#12 Omnipresent (catvnet-116-96.catvnet.com)[15663]
Weeeeee I'm in a gold report :)... Just a few things to say. The reason I always moved out my forces just when heartcutter moved out was i had a nice little observer tagging along at his natural, and If i could hit heart before he sieged up all the way and mined out then I had a better chance. Also, if the vultures had proceeded into my main early on to take out probes, I had a reaver that had just popped out I believe, so it was in his best interests to retreat ;-<.

As far as my build goes, I played elminster in a tvp with me terran, and he owned me similarly to how I beat heartcutter, except I put up a lot less of a fight.. The strat that I had used this game isn't anything major as I had done it in the past, but what surprised me in the game vs elminster was that he had used one gate and not 2!

I decided to try it compared to building two gates. Normally I'd have 4 zeals and 25 supply when I started my cy core, 6 zeals when starting on my robo, and when the reaver popped out 6 zeals and 2 goons. With one gate I had 25 supply and 3 zeals when I started my core (means I had more probes), 5 zeals when the core finished, and 5 zeals and two goons when the reaver would pop out.

There isn't much difference until you start analyzing it. With the one gate build I'm CONSANTLY making probes, which pays off in the long run, I get to reaver AND get my units faster than normal, and I have enough cash to make more reavers where as with two gates it uses up more of your cash making goons and your robo facility or one of your gates is almost always idle.

In my opinion the one gate build is simply faster, more efficient, and better in the long run, and it helped out alot in the games I played with heartcutter. Anyone else have any input?

#13 Von Doom (194.218.16.3)[15665]
Yes a nice BR, though Toss does NOT own anything..
It was a good and entertaining report, but as many others, i say more games where heavy metal heartcutter cuts the hearts of tosses!!!
(and toss them away.. heh)
I thought he would win when he tanked the goons in the middle, but it was a grand move by omni when he killed off the tanks..

When a Terran uses mines to stave off dts and not turrets observers become 10x more useful because you can often park them right in the middle of his base or on cliffs overlooking key areas without fear of being shot down by turrers.
#15 SnowSquall (a11a211.neo.rr.com)[15670]
Revisting this report, since I'm awake now...

This illustrates brilliantly how much micro it takes for the terran to pull off succesfull attacks and defenses. Just one slipup (HC forgetting to lower his barracks back down) spells doom. Or forgetting to mine likely drop places. Or (insert other reason here). I know that's true for any race, but as terran you literally can't afford mistakes. So in this regard, this report was extremely educational for me as well.

While I'm not totally against using mines as base defense, I pretty much have to agree with Blank that they have become somewhat over-rated... unless you go crazy and lay 15 mines down.

Oh well, both these players could be done with me in time for tea, so what am I talking about anyways. :)
#16 (relay.atinc.com)[15674]
I'm actually surprised that Toss won this one. Heavy Metal Terran is tough to beat on alot of maps for Toss. I had a heck of a time on rivalry the other day, barely winning, and I've lost to Heavy Metal on alot of maps... then again, I'm not as good as Omnipresent.

Something wierd... report ratings are supposed to be cut off at 5 now, but this has 6... hmm.
#17 Whoop (pool0612.cvx8-bradley.dialup.earthlink.net)[15679]
Wowow good report. Well written and easy to follow the action. Ha this just goes to prove how important recon is - ie comsat.

I gave this the original nine rating, but hit "ok" a few times. I think my weird connection may have led to the vote being counted a few times. Excellent report.

Omni played well. They were two great games.
He knows Protoss well, and made NO slipups that would have cost him. Kudos to you!

Was I playing at 100%. No. Hehe. I blame that on AOK. All game I was clicking on my control groups, then hitting spacebar, which is supposed to center on the group (Well, at least in AOK, it does!). Comical yes, but unfortunately when you compound these small errors, it can be somewhat fatal. You have to play terran almost flawlessly when you take on expert players. I did not.

I would be up for a rematch. It's not often I lose. And when I do, I have something to learn.

#21 HardDrive99 (eag40481.corp.novatel.ca)[15692]
I like the 1 gateway build vs terran for the reason that you state Omni. It allows you to tech at a faster rate... and that's the best counter vs the heavy metal strat.

Without the reaver drop at the start it would have been a much closer game.

My guess is that Heart is going to augment his push with a couple gollies the next time out. It didn't look like he had any type of counter to keep your shuttles from dropping reavers right in the middle of things.

#23 Johnny_Vegas (staff-8.ahnet.net)[15696]
Wow, this was a great report. I think the reason 6 "ratings" occured is cause probably there was some lag when Mark voted and he hit the button a few times causing multiple votes thus bypassing my Max of 5 votes thing.. oh well. heh If any MORE votes are recorded I'll be worried.

Wow HC lost for once. Well he did make a few mistakes, but it was still a close game. Great job on the report. That omnipresent is pretty darn good. But I put my money on HC in future games...
#24 [FLS]prozerran[15704]
Hey johnny,

I dunno if you really care about this, but implementing semaphores can solve this problem of rating.
#25 Johnny_Vegas <font color=red><i>(BR.COM Admin)</i></font>[15714]
Semaphores? Are you just trying to act smart FLS? =]
#26 Hannibal (69user249.ctinets.com)[15724]
I think going for reaver in that game was excellent. Factory strat can be countered by early reaver and goons. Dropping reavers on top of tanks is painful. Many terrans don't go for goliaths until later (myself included) and goliaths are needed to stop reavers dropping directing on top of tanks. Some marines to guard tanks are always nice too which brings me to my second point. Even a terran who is going for factory has at least one barrack and it is almost always a good idea to non-stop marines from that one barrack unless resources is a concern. Marine is simply a great unit that can shoot shuttles, more micro-friendly and do better vs goons. Reavers can be kept away by tanks when he can't drop directly on top of you. Yes, they can be stormed but it forces him to go templar. The more units you force a toss to use the more stressful for a toss. That way it is tougher for him to expand all over.

#27 Drefsab (rc66.Rmax1.globalsite.net)[15747]

#29 [FLS]prozerran[15752]
heh.
semaphores are just a tool to let a function enter it's criterical region in which all other concurrent functions must wait until that function leave the region.

Just some Operating System crap I'm learning this semester; but it would be useful if you block a semaphore when someone click "vote", then unblock the semaphore when the vote count is incremented.

(i assume the vote function is something like:
void vote(int BRid, int rate){
// enter criterical region here
if (votecount[BRid]<5){
vote[BRid]=(vote[BRid]*votecount[BRid]+rate)/(votecount[BRid]+1);
votecount[BRid]++;
// leave criterical region here
success();
}
// leave criterical region here
failure();
}

)

umm.. am I making any sense here? =]
#30 [FLS]prozerran[15753]

#33 Johnny_Vegas (control.ahnet.net)[15768]
Hmm that's not really how my code works bp, I do some DB queries.. Thing of it this way..

URL connection to sendvote script takes place.. but its lagged, so Mark hits the button again.. this causing another URL connection to the send vote..

Well.. The first connection checks the Database and finds only 4 votes have been cast, so it casts its vote, the SECOND url connection has already passed the point in the php script where it gets the number of votes and it ALSO counted 4. So the second process inserts another vote into the database..

Anyway something like that happened, but its no big deal, I deleted the extra votes.

#36 [MrFurious] (bha11-s46.mtl.colba.net)[15778]
Zileas detailed an early reaver build which I have been using with some success. Basically the goal is to get a reaver+shuttle at around 25 control.

I have found it works wonders against new players but I don't know how it would fare against expert players because your entire defense comes out of one gate and is usually only 1 zeal and 2 goons by the time the reaver is ready. Remember, Zileas was a top player back in the pre-1.05 days so the timing for this might not be favorable anymore which could explain why we don't see many top people using it.

Done well however, it is really fast. So fast that I have been called a cheater for using it. It leads to isanely one-sided games. Either you crush his peon line and you're ahead for the rest of the game or you get rushed before the reaver is out and you die.

What do you guys think? Is it too risky? Is it better to wait until you have 4-5 zeals before going cy-rob?

Cheers,
MrFurious.

Heh... no one wants me to win game two. Sniff ;-<
#38 Drefsab (168.91.128.9)[15783]
Aww, don't cry Omni... You play toss pretty well, you're not Mark4 too are you? Game 2 should be up by 11pm or 12am (est) tonite. A little shameless self promotion. :-)
#39 [15787]
Well MrFurious.. I think that quick reaver drop would work half the time.. Sounds risky, but a good strat to use agaisnt someone better than you.

However I like to be unpredictable myself, like the other day I went 4 rax straight marines and killed a decent zerg player with like 15 marines and 4 scvs.. Haha I'm still laughing about that one.
My point is, you could get rushed WAY before a reaver pops out, and you'd get smoked..
#40 [MrFurious] (bha10-s42.mtl.colba.net)[15797]
I know that Johnny, the last BR I posted (as ~Nb~Grimjack) shows a situation where I narrowly avoid a marine rush. Partly thanks to my micro but mainly thanks to a lack of target priority on the part of my opponent.

I haven't played since then (ISP difficulties) However I plan to use this only when I see a bunkerer/canoner. The wallin is a hint he is going heavy metal so if you are fast you can get the reaver. I wonder if the race reaver vs tank is a close one. Some Heavy metalers like to mine alot vs protoss, this allows you to bypass that somewhat by making fast shuttles available early.

These are just thoughts, not tested any anyway, and they would need to be tested by better than me.

Cheers,
MrFurious
#41 (real.nauticom.net)[15829]
Nothing wrong with shameless self-promotion E-Minor...

Looking forward to your next report! This one was great.
#42 HardDrive99 (eag40481.corp.novatel.ca)[15872]
I always go wallin when facing a zerg or toss opponent. Just prevents my opponent from scouting me with a simple probe/drone. If you're going to mix up your strategies then you don't want your opponent looking at your base easily. Plus it makes handling those cloaked units so much easier.

These days it doesn't take much to get a toss player to think you're going heavy metal. Just pump out one vulture and most will take that bait.

And if you're a terran and decide to go Heavy Metal vs a toss then still produce marines or even better gollies to give yourself that anti-air punch. Carriers, shuttles with reavers or even scouts can really ruin a Heavy Metal day.
