#1 Bogalisk[74]

Alright, here's what I posted to BW S&T about that game, with minor additions:

----------------------------------------------

Well, first off- let's get one thing clear: I knew I was going to lose this game before I played it, I mean come on, look at the facts.

1. Mark4 plays island. Bogalisk *never* plays island. This was the first island game I'd played in like 5 months (more, I think), and I think I've only played like 4 total (against humans), ever.

2. I've never seen the map before. I could've like quickly switched to the map editor in the battle room before the game, but I was afraid I'd lose him to someone else for a 1v1. Mark on the other hand, spends so much time on this map, he's got a time-share condo by the 3:00 mineral expansion that sleeps in on the weekends. It's his fav. map, I think.

3. On top of that, I've only played 25 total games of brood war ever (I boycotted it due to its overly anti-zerg and pro-protossness, as many of you know) over the past 3 months.. My gears are so rusty, there's more rust than gear.

4. Protoss v zerg, on an island map. Need I say more. Actually I DO need to say more, because Mark did more than just the typical corsair air domination and reaver/temp drops that any idiot could win with. I'll say more later. All of my above excuses don't cover for mark's brilliant abiliy to squeeze out a victory in this game, when he very nearly lossed it.

So why did I play? Because I didn't want to be a weanie asshole, duh. Come on, this is supposed to be fun! I didn't want to deny him the chance to display his skills on his best map, with his best race. I knew he'd win, and I knew he'd imediadly make a BR to show off that he won, but so what? It's not being afraid to lose that makes a man a girl, it's being afraid to fight. So, I thought I'd be a good sport and give him a sure win while I experimented in new and unusual territory. :)

So anyway, I went with fast mutas. I figured he'd be expecting hydra drop, and he later said he was, and he should've because that's what I frequently do on land maps. But I went with early mutas, and we simultaneously attacked each other. He reaver dropped in the perfect spot behind my ore (I could tell he'd done that same drop in that same spot like 200000 times before. hehe!) and my mutas started raping his probes. About half of my drones died before two more mutas hatched and kiled the reaver.

Meanwhile, mark was screwed back at home. I had my mutas evenly spread out over his ore, and I killed a few of his cannons as they were warping in. He was in real trouble, and I thought I had it pretty much won.

But- and this was my favorite part that was really great to see- he did EXACTLY what it took to survive this. He warped in two photon cannon, side by side, on the edge of his base, away from his ore, and plenty far enough away to not be seen by my mutas. Next to it, he merged his temps into an archon. Oh, first one of them stormed two of my mutas, then he merged em.

So anyway, he moved the archon over the mineral line and sent all of the probes back to mine. I tried harassing a little, only to discover that the new archon acceleration makes them REALLY fast. My mutas would like fire two shots, and then the archon would come over and goo "shoo! shoo!" and the mutas would all scream like girls and go "nooo! You've do 30 damage and I only do 9, run away!"

So then I made my share of stupid mistakes in that I made three more mutas, when I should really have researched drop instead. All of my mineral buildup (zerglings) was going to waste, unable to attack. On top of that, I can't expand. Had I played again, I woulda know better (welcome to starcraft).

So anyway, like five hours later, I finally got drop and dumped a bunch of zerglings on him while attacking with guardians. A ton of them died pathetically to one storm, because when I pulled them back, the latency delayed their action and like 30 of them ran into the storm. I swear, psi storm might actually be balanced if there wasn't such a damn delay.

So, anyway, it was downhill from there. I had sent scourges out to scout, but they didn't really know where to go (thanks to their clueless leader who doesn't know where the resources are), and they completely missed his expansion. As soon as I found it later, I knew I was doing what a fish out of water does best. Dieing. I just sorta screwed around after that to see what mark would do, and that's when he did the super-cheesy pseudo-corsair raid. "Squee! Squee! Squee!" hehe

This was honestly a fun game, and I'm sort of proud that I almost pulled it off. I was *waay* our of my element playing island, and I was playing against a good protoss island player at that. It's what I'd call a "good loss".

I also liked that Mark guessed who I was. (Although, after I told him), which is good. Because that way he knows that I wasn't going to try to be a mega-weanie and not tell him that he beat Bogalisk. I tolk him I was me when the game was lost, just before I quit. :)

Lesons learned:

o Even though any idiot can beat zerg on island with protoss, Mark is not just any idot. The archon thing was good old fashioned improvisation tactics that deserved to win. You covered yourself for any imbalance gripes I make.

o Corsairs totally rock the universe. It was really sad when my scourge were losing to the corsairs too. I mean, come on, scourge die when they succeed. Scourge really should beat corsairs..

o Island maps give me lower back pain. I feel so restricted on them.

(This one is my gripe: I'm sorry bro.)
o Mark makes battle reports of his wins, but not his losses. This is not cool. When I beat him the first game, he said "I've already blocked out all the painful memories". When he beat me here in the 2nd, he said "Don't quit right away, I want to get some more screenshots." Those are both actual quotes.

o Archons are extra-zippy in BW. Now they can not only defend the probes, but they can run around the base with a broom and shoo away all the baddies. Archons are the "shoo!" units of the game.

o Psi storm is too versatile. Oh wait, no I didn't learn this. I already knew this. Well, It's even more true on island.
"Hmm.. Bogalisk might go for drop on me. I'd better build a lot of templars."
"Hmm.. Bogalisk might go mutas, I'd better build a lot of templars."
It's rock-scissors-paper, only the dam thing is, paper beats both rock and scissors.

o I honestly don't think the game can become balanced for both island and land. I think a choice has(/had) to be made. It's just so different than land.

o Mark needs a better handle. Come on, bro, your name is so boring. you need a handle. We should hold a contest to get mark a handle. Not something lame like "Demon_Blade" (hehe) but something better, that doesn't say "I have no imagination and there were 3 other Marks." Is "Logistician" taken? It's not great, but it beats your current one. That's at least a fairly unique thing about you. Uncommon, anyway.

Actually, I thought there weren't other Marks. And my god, it's nice to see someone else use Archons. Not nearly enough people use them. So many times I see Protoss bases destroyed by waves of Cracklings, when 3 archons could have saved them all that pain.

archons are great but they work better when there are shield batteries around
